3 yr old with chest infection

Ds2 has a chest infection. He first got ill a few days before Halloween, 39 degree temp coughing etc which went after a few days, and then the temp came back, no other symptoms.
Took him to the drs who did all the usual checks, the only anomaly was blood in his urine. Sent a sample off to the hospital which came back fine.
But for the last week he has been waking up at night time loads holding his chest up under his armpit area and saying his tummy hurts. It's only when he is lying down at night though. He was prescribed antibiotics as the dr heard reduced airflow to the right lung (what does that mean - I know I should have asked at the time) so this is the 4th day of antibiotics, and last night was awful. He would fall asleep, and semi waken sobbing That his chest hurts, this went on all night. He's not feverish, but is sweating like crazy at night time and his breathing when he is lying down is a bit faster than normal, not panting, just 35 breaths per minute or so. The last several nights have been like that.
He's okish during the day, clingy and a bit quieter than normal, eating a bit, drinking normally but very very pale, and not coughing a great deal.
What's going on? I feel like I am going nuts from the sleep deprivation (it doesn't help that I have only just finished a stint of night shifts)

Srry for the long post - I am going to take him back to the Drs, I think typing this out has helped me get the order of things straight in my mind.

That sounds like it could be asthma/viral induced wheeze to me, especially it being worse at night.

Perhaps ask your GP about using an inhaler for a few nights?

Turns out be be pneumonia! In hospital now for iv antibiotics.

Did they identify which bacteria is causing the pneumonia?
Could he has been exposed to tuberculosis?
You may want to check as this is one of those diseases which can be treated extremely well if done in a timely manner.

I was going to say he sounds a lot worse than my DS who gets chest infections every few months. Poor little thing, hope he improves quickly.

How do they identify the bacteria? He's had blood tests done but I haven't heard the results yet.
He actually had a great night - sleeping comfortably for the first time in three weeks, and has woken up had a drink and two biscuits.
He was very upright in the bed which seems to have worked wonders, as well as the antibiotics.

Through the blood tests I think. They then adjust the antibiotics if necessary.

I would ask the consultant which bacteria (s)he thinks is causing the pneumonia and whether it could be TBC.

I don't know where you are, but in several big cities in the UK TBC is on the increase and you can pick it up from people with open TBC who often may not be aware that they have it. This could be in a hospital, school, doctor's surgery etc.

Night sweats are one of the very typical TBC symptoms and TBC causes pneumonia.

This does not mean that he has it, but you may want to positively exclude it. Sometimes it is missed because doctors just didn't consider it, if it is missed for a prolonged time it becomes virtually untreatable and will then be fatal. If you are early, it can be totally treated.

So the probability that he has it is probably small, but I would personally want to be 100 per cent sure that he does not have it. Because if there is any doubt he will need a longer antibiotics regime and monitoring over a prolonged length of time.
