My nearly 6 month old is having a real trouble pooing. She started weaning nearly 2 weeks ago due to weight loss and has been fine with her bowel movements up until 4 days ago and she hasn't been since. I know she trying to as she's bearing down and going red but nothing happening. On the changing mat a couple times today shes had her legs up and really strained and you can see her little anus kind of getting bigger as if to push something out. She's managed to squeeze a tiny bit out tonight but it got stuck and I had to get the sticking out bit off with a baby wipe. You can also see that there's poo there trying to come out.

She's having a good amount of fibrous food and is still having a lot of breast feeds. Today I've reduced her solids and upped her milk feeds to try and help but nothing is shifting it. The poor little thing is getting a bit upset when trying to poo now as it seems really hard.

What can I do to help her. We've done tummy massage and about to have nice warm bath but I think it's got too hard to push out. Any suggestions?

Thank you

i've heard of some people using a very small amount of dilute orange juice or prune juice, but no experience myself. Tbh I'd say consult a doctor. I know it's the weekend, but you don't want it backing up and your little one getting a pooing-complex at such a young age, not to mention any other health complications. There could be some underlying cause, so best to get it checked.

I've had the same problem with my 7 month old and have started giving her lactulose which is suitable. She has had it for two days still waiting for the pooSmile

Thank you both.

I think I'm going to speak to pharmacist tomorrow for some advice.

I'm just concerned about the already really hard stuff that won't come out. Will any of that work for that or just make the stuff behind it softer?

Not sure on that question - the softer stuff behind may help get the harder stuff out, but depends on how hard and how big it's got. Ask the pharmacist about that.
