Im not sure if my GP has hurt my baby unnecessarily. He had is 8 week checks done by the GP and his immunisations done by the health visitor today. I was prepared for the screams of the immunisations however not what the doctor done to him. I have read what should happen at these checks things like cheking eyes testicles etc and the hip check which i have read consists of moving the leg/hip in a circular movement. This doctor pulled my baby's leg so hard to see if it would pop out! This was so painful for him i got such a freight.
Has this happened to everyone or has she done this wrong? She ddoes not have a great reputation and i am worried that she has hurt him!

Please help.

Thank you x

That is very, very unlikely

The hip check is quite vigorous and the doc will pull the hips right out to the side, and then press downwards

if baby is ok now, I wouldn't worry

and what is this "reputation" you speak of ? Hmm

you can choose to attend another doctor, you know

I've always been warned before the hip check that it looks worse than it is and they'll scream the house down... True in both counts everytime

Was the hv in the room? If so I doubt anything unusual happened... It's just a bit shocking the first time you see it done

yes the hip check is very hard to watch. i have no doubt that it hurts them as they scream so badly but i doubt the GP has caused an injury.

My ds2 had this Monday and also cried more during the checks too, and our doc isn't popular either. But he's fine.

Hi there,

We are shortly going to move this thread to Children's Health as we feel it's a better fit.

We hope you get some great advice.

Thanks.

When dd1 had her paed check in hospital, I took the opportunity to go to the loo. Dh said later he was sooo glad I wasn't there as it really looked alarming and I would have freaked. He's not the worrying type - I am. So my guess would be that this is the normal check.

If you are worried, i think it would be absolutely fine to make an appointment with another GP in the practice. Say you are worried about your baby's hips and ask him/her to check them gently. I would admit that the hip check really alarmed me but you may feel uncomfortable doing that. Good GPs don't mind new mothers taking their babies for checks, and it will put your mind at rest.
