Mumsnetters aren't necessarily qualified to help if your child is unwell. If you have any serious medical concerns, we would urge you to consult your GP.
Is it ok for des to be shaking / shivering with a fever?
(10 Posts)Ds is a but under the weather with cold snotty nose etc. today he has started shaking and looking very pale. Calpol relieves this for a couple of hours but it comes back.
Do I need to be concerned or is he just fighting the fever?
Dd never did this!
whats his temp?
I knew someone would ask that!! I am ashamed to admit I don't have a thermometer
He is warm to the touch and has hot back and forehead
You can give calpol and neurofen alternative doses so he is only going 2hours without IYSWIM.....that may help control his temp.
But if he still feels really hot to touch by tomoro morning i would get him checked at the GP. Might have an infection that the painkillers will just be masking....
Try lollies of fruit juice or mini milk. Last time I rang NHS Direct (a while back) they were advising cooling from the inside i.e. cold drinks, lollies etc. Worth checking with the GP tomorrow anyway. Un MN (()) to you and your DS.
My DS had this once when he had flu. He complained of feeling cold but was roastingly hot. I guess its that the flu upsets their thermo-regulation and so shivering and temperature are a feature of it. My DS was very pale with the flu too - and super sleepy. I think they say that as long as the temperature is coming down somewhat with Calpol or Neurofen then its just a question of treating the symptoms, keeping them hydrated and riding it out. I'd probably do the Calpol for 3h and then Neuro for 3h - that's always the big guns for us if they're really feeling cruddy. But...if you're worried then NHS Direct might be worth a ring?
I think the shivering can be how the body increases its temperature to fight the bugs. My ds2 gets this sometimes when he's starting to get ill. His usually stopped once he was hot so I'm afraid I can't offer advice if it keeps coming back.
Hmmm...only thing I just wondered. You said he was under the weather and then came home with temp and pale. So has he been under the weather with a common or garden cold for a while that has then developed into a fever and paleness? If its been something fairly innocuous and then has developed into a fever etc, then I'd be thinking of some sort of secondary bacterial infection (ears, chest?) and taking him to the Dr tomorrow morning to get it checked out and see if antibiotics are the order of the day.
Ah thanks everyone. He had been a bit snotty this morning and seemed to get worse as the day went on. Calpol at 4 perked him up and was playing outside at 6 but then gone downhill again. Will see how he is tomorrow . It's the shaking that concerns as I have never experienced this before with either ds or dd x
Whitegrenache I broke the digital thermomenter two years ago . DD2 has had several high fevers since, all of which have been treated/abated without a readout <big admission from control freak>
