Thrush & Re-occuring UTIs in 3y/o girl

DD2 keeps getting UTIs - pain on urinating and excessive weeing (over 200mls at times and can wee 5 or 6 times in a few hours). She has been referred for a bladder scan to rule out kidney reflux. She does drink a lot but it doesn't seem enough to fuel the huge wees she does Grin

She has now got thrush, could that be causing the excessive weeing or is it just because of the anti-biotics?

She does have Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, hypermobile joints, gastritis, ezcema and asthma so takes a cocktail of drugs/creams/inhalers. She has just started prednisolone steriods - could they have triggered the thrush?

I would think the anti b's a very likely cause of the thrush, as they strip the vagina of good bacteria, but unfortunately not of yeast.

Poor little thing sounds like she has a fair bit to content with!

See the doc but also you can get probiotic capsules / child friendly sachets to replace her good bacteria. I would sprinkle a little in pants as well. Get advice from a good health shop on which ones.

Good luck.

She was my healthy child as well (her sisters were a lot iller than her as babies) so it's a bit of a surprise to everyone that bits of her keep breaking!

Thanks for the advice on pro-biotics. I'll see if I can get some she will eat/take as/not look like medicine as at the moment I am bribing her with (non-Nestle) white chocolate buttons to take her meds - only one button per dose though as I am a mean mummy Wink Although that does end up being about 10 a day!

You could try the sachets, they dissolve in to a drink and don't taste of anything.

You'd have to get a lot of yoghurts down her to equal the amount.

Getting a gallon of yoghurt into her isn't a problem! Though if she thinks anything is meds she refuses to have it. TBH I was like that as a child - I got given a square of choc for each spoonful of the most yummy anti-biotic ever as I made out like it was poison. I have tasted all of DD2's meds and they are vile - even the calpol!

Smile

Well I can vouch for the probiotic sachets as being tasteless. Put them in a glass of milk and they'll help to clear things up. Good luck.

Do you use smellies or bubbles in the bath? In some children they seem to trigger UTIs and thrush.

No bubbles here due to ezcema. Just plain water and shampoo at the end for hair washing.
