eeeew... the DC's have worms. Happy weekend to us. What's the best plan of action?

They're 4 & 3 and it's the first time they've caught worms (thank God).

I'm off to the chemists shortly for some over the counter tablets, according to the Boots web-site they seem to be a one dose treatment with a possible second dose in 2 weeks. Does anyone know if this is the best treatment, should we go the walk in medical centre and get something stronger on prescription instead?

Have wiped all the surfaces & door handles with anti-bac wipes. Bed linen will be washed. Towels are always changed after one use anyway.

Will wash all the soft toys too.

Might get some of the stupidly expensive childrens foam hand wash to make hand-washing a bit easier, they're not too bad but it can be a bit hit and miss.

Anything else I should do? Apart from keep my distance from the germy little things wink.

I bought Ovex from the chemist the first time they had them. I happened to be at the GP's the next time and got exactly the same on prescription. The whole family should be treated. I think it's a dose each a week apart. I trimmed their nails really well and keep them trimmed. I wouldn't waste money on particular handwash unless they are reluctant handwashers as they really are a bit of a con. Hot water, soap and a clean handtowel does the job.

It's kind of inevitable, I'm afraid this is unlikely to be the last time they get them, and while they're disgusting they're not seriously harmful to an otherwise healthy child.

The most important things are to treat the entire family and then re-treat again before the eggs you missed have a chance to breed. And have them (and the adults) sleep in relatively tight fitting underwear, changed nightly in the interim.

Yes, I'm going to take the tablets / medicine too.

DS sleeps in pants (changed every night and again in the morning) and DD still has a nappy at night.

I'm quite hot on nails anyway as they get eczema but will see if there are any bits to be snipped off later.

Thanks for the advice smile.

Give the bedrooms a thorough hoover too.

good idea. I'll wash the sofa cover too, they do sometimes jump on it when they're naked.

Ovex has been taken and the washing machine is on non-stop. 5 loads so far today.

Will Dyson things after a cup of tea.

Think you have it covered - just would add, take the second dose after 2 weeks regardless. No 'if needed' about it!

Oh sounds awful. I haven't experienced worms yet with my dc. How do you know they have them?

Iamnevertouchingthemagain Sun 14-Aug-11 10:28:17

elibean yes, I bought 2 packs so will take a second dose in 2 weeks. Not mucking about with the little parasites!

clara DD did a rare poo in the potty and when I was praising her for being such a clever girl I looked at the poo and saw the little wriggling worms. I had to keep my "OMFG shock" to myself. Then I encouraged DS to have a poo before bath time and peeked into the loo afterwards and saw worms in the loo <<boak>>. So that's how I know. They hadn't complained about itchy bottoms or anything, I think it had only just happened actually, I get to see DD's poo-y nappys all the time and would have noticed them easily.

The thing is I'm paranoid about nits and have already bought a bottle of the anti-nit lotion so we have it if / when we need it. I never thought about buying worm tablets just in case. I'll keep a packet in the cupboard from now on in case they get it again.

If they go to nursery tell them so they can inform the other parents, we got an official everytime someone had them at my dc nursery, they never got them thankgod

Thanks for the reminder. I was going to e-mail nursery and came onto the laptop but got distracted by MN!
