Possible wheat intolerance advice needed please

Does anyone know anything about wheat / gluten intolerance?

DS is six and has always had quite a bloated tummy (disproportionate to the rest of his body). He sometimes gets constipated and his usual poo cycle is only every 3-4 days as it is. He will often complain his tummy hurts.
He eats well, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and water.

He suffers (very mildly) with asthma, and quite badly with hayfever.

Doctor wasn't in the least bit interested when I mentioned all this to him a year ago, but I'm just wondering if this could be some sort of food intolerance?

Any idea's or experience greatly appreciated.

my DS who is 6 too was diagnosed as coeliac last July and my we're waiting for the results of DD's endoscopy. Have you looked at the Coeliac UK website? DS had symptoms off and on for around 18 months before he was diagnosed but it's when I saw this page www.coeliac.org.uk/coeliac-disease/what-is-coeliac-disease that I the lightbulb moment and asked for him to be tested.

This might sound like a strange question but what colour is his poo?

The symptoms you mention sound like gluten intolerance, unfortunately the only way to find out is to do a diet trial b/c only v severe end of the spectrum (ie coeliac) can be detected via blood tests or gut biopsy.
You could ask for bloods etc now and it can turn out positive for celiac, although there can also be a false neg if the intolerance hasn't damaged his gut severely enough to show up in tests.
Do a blood if you can but I would go for diet trial anyway for your own peace of mind - which is what I did with my ds despite neg bloods and we haven't looked back since.
Swollen tummy suggests inflammation in the gut, if you get ESR that would prob show raised as well.
Or search for gluten sensitivity - which starts as low level intolerance but tends to build up in time and can affect various organs not just gut.

Hi,

I help run a website www.glutenfreehelp.co.uk that was set up in May 2011 by my husband who is a coeliac to help provide advice and support to people who have or think they may be a coeliac. If you are looking for information, then I would advise you visit the website and look at the "signs and symptoms" page, which should help give you a better idea. We also have a useful links page which will provide you with additional information. Does your son tend to get a bloated stomach when eating bread, pasta or bakery products in particular?

If you need any further information you can contact me here, or if you have any other questions you could also post it on our forum.

Regards,

Lisa

Been offline for awhile, but thanks for all your responses. He does get a particularly bloated tummy, especially after eating cake (small, individual portion, not a great big slice!) and gets very bloated after bread. I will check out your website Lisa.
