Anyone around? high temp. What should I do?

HI

DS, 19 months, has been a bit 'off' for a few days, runny nose, cold, cough etc which is normally nothing unusual for him (under ENT, possible adenoid problem) but more so than 'normal'

Anyway Friday he wasn't well, was slowly burning up and checked temp. 39.4! (digital ear thermometer)
Paracetamol given and eventually his temp came down to normal after 2 hours.
Was groggy and off all day yesterday (Sat) and give paracetamol twice when temp started to rise.
Tonight he just wouldnt settle at all in bed. Been crying and asking for water every half hour. Checked him again before and he was burning up again and temp was 40.0 at 02.45. stripped to nappy and paracetamol given.

Hes now sleeping in my bed next to me and I cant settle or sleep without worrying about him. Worried about febrile convulsions and all sorts. Just checked temp and 39.9 now. Not sure what to do. NHs direct website only symptoms checks for over 5's. :(

Should Isee how he goes and leave it til morning and ring primary care or ring NHS direct now?

If he is asleep, just leave him for the time being. Sleep is really the best thing for them when they have temperature due to a virus (sounds like a cold virus).

the thing to remember is that the temperature is a GOOD thing, in that it is the body's reaction to the virus, and it is working to kill off the virus with heat.

I know it is worrying but try and get some rest, obviously give him plenty of fluids if he wakes and asks for them, and maybe call NHS direct in the morning.

Also, always trust your instincts - if you feel something is really not right, you should NEVER be afraid to call NHS or even an ambulance.

If sounds like he has an infection of some kind. (not a doctor). If he is asleep and his temp is coming down then sponge him with troys water and wait until morning. If he wakes up and seems distressed or his temp won't cone down then phone out of hours.
They always say trust your instincts. If you are freaking out and can't sleep then call now, it may take 50 mins to get a call back though!

He woke again for more water and moaned a bit but settled again now. temp 39.3 at the moment

Try ibuprofen to bring fever down. My ds got very high fevers from ear infections and nothing but ibuprofen worked on him at all. We spent a lot of time in emergency when he was a new born. My advice is, if it's not coming down by a point (that's with farenheit) every 1/2 hour or so, then I would ring the doctor.

If he's asleep I'd let him be for now but I'd get him checked in the morning if his temp doesn't come down. Do you have a walk in centre you could go to?

Well managed to fall asleep for a little while. His temp went down to 38.1 at 5.30 and he hadnt woke for over an hour.
Ive just woke up and hes asleep but still feels hot. Checked temp and its back to 38.4.
He might have some infection but not sure what. His wee doesnt smell bad. Could be his adenoids though. What was unusual was that he pooed in the night. Not done that since he was newborn.

Havent got any ibuprofen, only thing thats missing from my cupboard. Will get some later
Not sure where walk in centre is or if we have one. Is that similar to primary care? Think i will ring NHS direct later if he doesntbimprove by dinnertime.

If it was me I would get some Junifen when you can this morning and try him with a dose of that as others have said - you can alternate it with the Calpol.

But also, even though I'm now on my 4th DC and have seen it all before, if you are at all worried then they absolutely will not mind you popping into the childrens' department of A&E just to check him out. Better to be safe than sorry IMO.

Make sure he's drinking (which he seems to be), if he's got a runny tummy try him with a little toast, but I suspect he may not want to eat. Hydration is more important than sustenance though when they're like this.

Hope he's feeling better soonest, and that you can all get some rest after what seems to be a rough night for you.

I think it's the same as primary care. You should be able to find it with Google or the nhs website. Or as said above there should be an out of hours message on your drs number. Nurofen is generally better than calpol for getting temps down. They never mind seeing a poorly baby though. Even just for reassurance. Hope he's better soon. It can be very scary when they are ill like that.

Is there a walk in centre near you?

Could be tonsiltitis...my 2 dc always get really high temps with that.

Hi sparkleshine, my dd used to take febrile convulsions so temperatures scare me. Definitely I found nurofen better than calpol so get some as soon as you can. You can give them both at the same time if necessary. I would phone out of hours doctor now & not wait as he may need antibiotic for ear or throat infection. Just to try & put your mind at rest I always remember a doctor telling me that they tend to take convulsions at the start of the illness & this always was true in dds case. Hope he gets better soon.

Thanks everyone. Dont like to feel like a paranoid mummy of a pfb but I am :)

Will defo get some nurofen or something and phone GP number. Just given him more calpol now hes woken up.
Its horrible not knowing whats wrong. Hes had ear infections (another reason for ENT) but usually its obvious hes got one. He doesnt seem to be in pain.

Nearest walk in centre is a few miles away but can drive there.

I'd get him checked out myself. My DS is on rapid access to the local hospital due to lung issues. They say (last night) take ds in if his temperature is over 39 and doesn't get under control with calpol/ibruprofen - and advise us to alternate them.
