3 yr old constipated but doing runny poos. Movicol or not?

DS occasionally gets constipated. When he's not done a poo for a couple of days and starts straining then I usually give him a sachet of movicol and that gets things moving.

However he seems very bunged up this week and is complaining of a sore bottom. He has had a sachet of movicol every day for 3 days now and is straining, doing runny poos and is really uncomfortable. His tummy looks quite big so I think there are solids stuck inside. Presumably the runny stuff is the result of the movicol and is finding its way past the blockage.

I've been giving him juice, fruit, humzingers, a bath, tummy massage etc. in an attempt to soften things up, but should I give him more movicol or will that just make more runny poo to squeeze past the solids? And how do I encourage the solids to come out?

Hope someone can help. Sorry for the tmi post!!

The runny poo is the new poo, the hard pieces are the ones he's blocked up with.

How much movicol is he having? You can give up to eight sachets a day if needed.

I'd certainly keep him on the movicol and probably increase it until he's been properly, then lower it back to maybe one every other day to help him keep regular.

I would do two sachets today and maybe tomorrow - that should hlep him. Poor thing. Give plenty of fluids.

Thanks. Is the movicol going to loosen up the hard poo causing the blockage though? I don't just want to end up with a load of really runny new poo and the blockage just sitting there indefinitely.

If you give movicol and ensure he drinks plenty the solid poo will be rehydrated making it easier to pass. He's passing overflow around the solid stuff. Hope he's sorted soon.

No the movicol should soften up the impacted poo and it will come out - be warned it might be runny and quick...

DD used to have a maintenance dose of about half a sachet a day to prevent the build up of hard poo. (once we cleared the blockage)

If it doesn't clear in another two day then go for three sachets per day and keep increasing... it will come out eventually!

Thanks everyone - I'll give him some more movicol now and keep feeding him fruit etc.!
