What can I give DS for his cold, other than Calpol?

DS(6) has a rotten cold. He keeps just sitting there, quietly crying with tears running down his face as he feels so bad. He's also complaining of a headache. I've been giving him Calpol but he says it 'only works for 5 minutes'. I was just wondering if there was anything else that might help?

Medised? Or Nurofen. Hope he feels better soon.

Calprofen which is liquid ibuprofen, can give along with the calpol or staggered through day. Might help. Pharmacist in chemist will be able to advise re dose etc. If headache doesnt settle might be worth getting him seen by gp?

Sterimar nose spray or salt water drops to help clear his nose. If Calpol does not deal with his headache then I would give calprofen/children's ibuprofen. Let him sleep with head higher than normal, raise top end of bed or extra pillow (firm). If no fever, may be go out for brief walk, bit of fresh air may help.

madised ok from age 6 and has a decongestant if his nose is blocked. Childrens nurofen can also help. We use a karvol vaporiser overnight in the kids bedrooms when they are bunged up. Calpol also do a saline nasal spray for kids which could help clear a blocked nose too.

Sambuccol helps to knock colds on the head, you can get it as a syrup or capsules. Black elderberry cordial, from healthfood shops.

If he's been having the full doses of Calpol, then you'll have to wait before giving him Medised. But you could alternate straightaway with nurofen.

If he has headache that is so severe the pain is breaking through OOC remedies, then I suggest you seek medical advice.

I would also suggest seeing a GP, I often get sinusitis with a bad cold, very painful & often needs antibiotics to clear it.

It can be hard for children to be clear with where pain is coming from, when my DS got sinus trouble with a cold it was very sore head and sore upper teeth, but can vary.

Hope he's feeling better soon.

as others haves mentioned, you can alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen (eg calpol at 8am, calprofen and 12, calpol at 4pm etc). Also, I would get some Olbas oil and out a couple of drops on his clothes and pillow. Really helps to clear out the sinuses. Good luck!

Thanks. I think his headache is just his head full of cold tbh, but I'm keeping an eye on it. I've never seen him this sorry for himself before. Sad I'll go to the chemist and get some more medicinces and chicken soup... and lollies. Smile
