What do I do now?

I would really appreciate your views. Sorry this is a long one

My DS (2 1/2) has had a cold. yesterday he vomitted in the night then seemed ok in the morning. In the afternoon his temperature soared, he went and lay down on the sofa and went to sleep. Even when he woke, he just lay there doing nothing but staring into space. He responded when I asked him questions and wasn't confused but this behaviour is totally out of character. He is usually charging around and even when he is ill he will normally play quietly. He never sits still!

I spoke to NHS direct who suggested nurofen in addition to the calpol. I also called the oncall GP because I wasn't entirely happy. They suggested that they wouldn't act until he'd been ill with a temperature for at least 3 days. He slept through the night and appeared to be on the mend with just a dose of calpol this morning but then at lunch time he has gone down hill again.

When I changed his nappy he became quite tearful and was complaining of pain in his groin.

I am just at a loss as to where to go now. Do I go to the GP (I'm not really comfortable taking him out at the moment as he seems so unwell) or do I wait the 3 days (which seems a lot for a little 2 year old who is obviously unwell)?

Just to give an overview of his symptoms

temp 38C+ (may have been higher initially but only bought a thermometer last night)
cold symptoms inc a productive cough
vomitting x1
diarrhea x 2
lethargic
sleepy
reduced appetite and not drinking much despite having drinks constantly available.

Any views would be very welcome as I feel like a totally neurotic Mum. Please tell me if you think I am - I can take it!

Thanks for any advice.

Take him to gp
Get emergency appointment this afternoon wrap him up and take him
Ridiculous advice to wait three days if there is no diagnosis
Take that list to gp, written down if necessary, and also mention groin pain (maybe urine infection or lymph node in groin or gastroenteritis or even appendicitis)Good luck

Thanks for your reply. I'm waiting for GP to call back now.

I just needed someone else to say what I was thinking. Both NHS direct and out of hours have made me question my own judgement by being so dismissive.

Just checked his temp and it has risen again so I will wait an hour and then do exactly as you suggested, appointment or no appointment and wait at the surgery until someone looks at him. Temp of 39C with Calpol is not acceptable.

Thanks again.

I often wonder if I'm neurotic when it comes to taking them to the doc. However, when they are so small they can't tell you how they feel, where they hurt etc so I don't see the harm in getting professional to check the ears, throat, chest and temp. It's always better to err on the side of caution. Hope all goes well

Is there a walk in centre at your local hospital ? Might be worth taking him there ?

Thanks for all your replies. I managed to get an emergency appointment yesterday evening. I have to say the GP was very good with him but basically told me that DS has a viral respiratory infection and there was nothing to be done apart from the Neurofen and calpol.

She felt the sore groin was probably down to swollen glands from his body fighting the infection.

He seems much better today in himself but still very pale and tired.

I do feel like a neurotic Mum again but I am glad I went as I he has never been this poorly before with a virus and certainly never sleeps on the sofa when there are toys to play with!

Thanks again for your replies. Its nice to know there is support out there.
