Could anyone who has had an mri scan....

tell me exactly what happens and what it is like, so that I can tell dd1. She has to have one of her back on 9th March and I think she is worried.

You have to lie very very still. I was given headphones so I coud listen to the radio (I could choose which station I wanted). It does not hurt at all, just make sure ou get really nice and comfortable before it starts. I kept my eyes closed so as not to feel claustrophobic. Think it took about 20 mins but the time went quicker than I thought it would.

Its very noisy. I wasn't given the option of radio/music. So loads of thud, thud, thud, thud, ding, thud - constantly and loudly. It is claustophobic, you're given a panic button which if you press they will pull you straight out. I kept my eyes shut and hummed loudly to myself.

No idea how old your dd is but my my ds had one at 3 months and there were children of primary age. We had to report to childrens' ward where at the right time each were given a chill pill and then wheeled to MRI. After checking with me that i was not pregnant i was allowed in the room. DS was very good considering the noise (hense the headphones although no music at his age; i had ear plugs) and the banging - all normal. He had his own clothes on - in case she worries. As long as keeps absolutly still it will be very quick! Staff were lovely and reassuring. Good luck to your daughter.

You can't be wearing anything metallic though.

It's boring and noisy, but quite painless.

My ds had an MRI scan two years ago [10yrs old] . The nurse lay him down and put headphones on him & he was inside the machine for about 30 minutes . We were told we could make up our own CD with ds's favourite songs & they played this for him during the scan
DH was allowed to stay with him in the scanning room . Make sure your dd wears no metal on her clothes , zips /studs etc as the machine works like a big magnet AFAIK .

Dd (age 7) had one recently. The play specialist met her before the scan and let her listen to a cd of the noises she would hear.
Dd wore her own clothes, she had earphones to muffle the noises. I stayed in the room and was also given earphones. Hers was for lower back and took about 20 minutes.

Dd is 13. She wants to take her own cd to listen to, so i will ring up and check that it's ok.

She doesn't really say much to me if she is wworried about something, but i can still tell and I know she is worried.
