on going cough

Have previously posted thinking DS had whooping cough however Dr convinced that's now not the case, wondering if there's any advise out there.

DS still has barking hacking cough after 8 weeks. X ray showed something deep in lungs and he's now had 2 weeks of erythromycin and 2 weeks of amox clav to very little effect (though as previously posted first night of second ab triggered massive coughing fits) He's also had 3 days of oral steroids - didn't make a note of the name, 6 small tablets to be give at once. At first thought they'd helped - wasn't woken up by DS coughing but no long term difference. Nothing there to cough up.

Doc made an urgent referral last Thursday to hospital which I assumed meant he'd be seen with in days. Called yesterday to find out they'd only just opened email and consultant on holiday next week so would think about booking him after he comes back and will send out a letter then - that must mean at least 3 weeks from docs actual referral. Is this right? Normal? DS is well in himself otherwise I'd have kicked up more of a fuss before now but must admit am getting increasingly frustrated and worried. Have another Dr's appointment tomorrow what should I be asking? Anybody thinking asthma? anything else?

I have extremely healthy DC and could count the number of times b4 this that both children have been to Dr's on 1 hand. I've never had to deal with anything like this and feeling little lost.

Thanks Pixie. Initial call to hospital yesterday gave me an even longer wait -I've already managed to get it down by pleading. They won't listen to me any more and will only talk to GP from now on. Am seeing her tomorrow and the practise has already said if I convince her it's an emergency she could insist he's seen same day. This seems over kill though and I'd be lying, its horrible and worrying but not critical, I'm just looking for an inbetween response. Sad

Hi Pixie
Saw my GP and with no convincing at all on my part she sent DS for same day referral to hospital. Consultant did no more tests, didn't bother to look at previous x ray until I specifically talked about it and is convinced its 'just a virus lingering from initial cold' - there never was a cold! 'The roughness in cough is caused by the mucus' - there's none and she conceded that after she listened to chest. GP has been fab, so disappointed with the 'expert'. I'm so amazed by some of the posts with mums quoting medicines and tests etc like doctors - I guess you have to have a pretty good understanding of it all yourself if you're going to make sure your child gets good care. Big eye opener!
