Out of control Asthma/school games

OK I may be talking through my hat but I believe the stuff I am wittering on about; if I am wrong do tell me

Exercise is generally good for asthmatics; swimming especially

Exercise is not necessarily good for asthmatics who are currently having an episode/attack

Exercise in a controlled temperature is better than exercise in cold weather

Is it acceptable for me to write a note saying no games (rugby outside) & for the school to then make her stand outside without a coat on?

no.

My understanding is as above.

Bang out of order to make her stand outside in the cold.

I would talk to the school and ask them to make arrangements for her to be somewhere inside during PE lessons.

If necessary ask if she can sit in the back of her form tutors lessons with some work to do or something. I used to go to the library and work when I couldn't do PE.

This is going back a bit, but when I was at school you got sent to sit in the library if you were too sick for games. I learned to forge my mum's signature when I was about 12, and spent a happy few months until I was rumbled, snuggled up in the library doing homework (which meant I paid more attention to it than I normally would, or, at the very least, had more spare time at home), or even better, got to spend some time reading. This was a far better use of my education than running about chasing a ball.

Surely you could point out that there is no educational value in standing outside in a coat watching everybody else?

Or is it that the sports teachers know that, if they allow this, if the kids/parents of kids who have no interest or talent in sport cotton on to this ruse, they might just write endless notes on the basis that sport-hating children might be better off learning stuff that doesn't involve netball?

have a word and say she is able to do any PE indoors - but not outside as her asthma is very bad at present and being exaccerbated by the cold weather - I have it and being outside at all at the mo is a nightmare!

If she HAS to be outside tell her to wear a scarf over her mouth - just one layer so she can breath through it easily, but means the air in her mouth stays warmer so less of a reaction when it goes down to lungs... a tip my asthma nurse gave me a couple of years back!

if they take a ventolin inhaler it is often good to use it before going outside in the cold as it will help stop the lungs from closing up in the col d and to take it before exercise

katy, if she is needing her ventolin so much, I think Id take her back to the GP/Astma clinic for review. She might need a short sharp shock of steroids to heal her lungs.

As soon as DS1 needs his ventolin more than 5x a day for 3 days,I take him in for review. SOmetimes its nothing, sometimes its a chest infection, sometimes he just needs a bit of extra help.

I agree Hatti

But she saw the GP twice & we spoke to the asthma nurse, they want to hold off on steroids atm as she had so many last year

School have agreed to inside games (under protest)

We will see (but if her peak flow is as low tomorrow as it was today we will be back to see the GP anyway)
