Squint surgery aftermath - total panic

My son has just had squint surgery on his left eye - it has been four days since the op and there is a large raised lumpy red scar on the surface of his eye. He doesn't have a follow up appt for a week and the hospital was non committal when I called - 'the doctor will have a look at it when you come in...'. It looks awful - not just blood shot and red like the rest of his eye, but scaly and bumpy. I googled the surgery and found a case where a man was left with a permanent scar like this over his eye. I'm in a total panic. Has anyone else been through this? Is it normal? Please advise.

I would insisit on seeing someone sooner than that. My mum had an op for lazy eye and was left with a scar.

Hi Winnybella, Thanks for posting.Did they fix it for her or was it permanent?

Well, she had another op to fix it, but it didn't work, so she ended up with a very pink scar across the inner corner of her eye. It faded, but it's still visible.

I would demand to be seen, tbh. I'm not sure if waiting a week will make a difference, but perhaps?

Keep this thread bumped and hopefully people with some experience of this will answer.

Thank you. I've called the hospital again and left messages - hopefully they'll get us in soon.

You're right to follow it up, but try not to panic - it may be just post-surgery swelling etc.

DS1 (now 11) had squint correction at age 2.5 and he had a very red, bumpy patch on his eye for about a week afterwards.

I'm glad to say it healed fine and now you'd never know he'd ever had any surgery Smile

(And his eyes are 99% straight!)

Thanks you fluffy hamster! That has cheered me no end. I've been torturing myself with online horror stories which doesn't help at all. It's good to hear from someone who had a similar experienceSmile.

Last update on this one - 6 months on.

He's left with a permanent scar - looks like a dark blue bruise on his eye, but it's not hideous and the eye is now completely straight - everyone comments on how much better he looks (though I thought he looked cute with a squint....a mother's rose tinted specs perhaps). Anyway, a little more worryingly, he is still using his eyes independently, but the right more than the left - there has been a deterioration in the quality of his sight in the left so he may have to be patched - will have to wait and see. Would I do it again? I don't think I would, but the doctor did say that both things - the scarring and the sight issues were unusual. Maybe he was just unlucky.
