Three week old baby - noxious farts and tummy discomfort

My three and a half week old is mostly breastfed with formula topups on pediatrician advice due to weight loss. She has been farty since the beginning and they are really smelly.

We all got a sicky virus this weekend and the baby threw up for 12 hours but gp has seen her and she is mainly better now. Except yesterday and last night she clearly had tummy ache and trapped fart wind.

Giving her cooled boiled water eased it a bit and in middle of night i gave her brown sugar dissolved in boiled water as advised by many websites and old wives, and I let her sleep on her side which is only way she seemed comfortable.

But this am she is still farty (smellier than usual) and in some discomfort - any advice on how I can help her? I've done the tummy massage and leg cycling thing.

Gripe water?

Have you looked on the Feeding board here? You might be able to get advice about gradually reducing top ups and moving back to exclusive bf. It may just be from the tummy bug you all had but formula can upset tummies too so it might be worth a try!

Personally I wouldn't do the sugar water thing but each to their own!
