In your experience, can teething cause a fever?

I know that all health care websites say that teething only causes a slightly elevated temperature but my 14 month DS always seems to get a fever when teeth come through. He's particularly miserable at the moment cutting molars and his temp's been up to 39C. I've been giving him calpol alternated with ibuprofen + teething powder/gels, cold flannels to chew etc. His temp does come down with the medication but seems to go back up while he's sleeping. He's got no other symptoms and I'm fed up with the doctor looking at me like I'm a loony - we've been a couple of times before with the same type of thing. They said it was viral and not related to the teething then made comments about me being a 1st time mum. I believed them at the time but it seems like too much of a coincidence for him to get a virus every time he cuts a tooth. Anyone found the same thing happening to their LOs? Thanks!

They teethe almost constantly between the ages of 6 and 18 months, and they gets loads of viruses during this time as well because they are crawling/walking/having more contact with other children/picking up stuff and putting it into their mouths etc. Added to that and it's winter and loads of viruses around.

So it's not really a co-incidence that your ds is teething and has got a virus as the same time.

yes - every time my DS was cutting a tooth he would get a fever and snotty nose. Interestingly (as I had plenty of time and 20 teeth to study the pattern!) the fever followed a general pattern every 2 hours or so of rising to a peak and then receding again, then a pause for a few hours and it would start up again. I gave up on Calpol etc as it made no difference to the fever pattern if I gave it or not and did not seem to make him that much more comfortable etc.

I don't understand how docs can say there is no relation when the teeth and gums are breaking through so close to sinuses and fever is not only a reaction to infection or virus.

If it is any consolation as soon as his last 2 molars came in the fevers have disappeared and when he is poorly and then they are a very different quality iyswim

As a CM of over 30 years experience, I would definitely say some children get a fever with teething (some have no signs at all)

I also firmly believe that some children get either constipation or diarrhoea, although Drs will say it is not so.

Thanks for your input :) Some more teeth appeared yesterday and fever has calmed down so whatever caused it, at least we're both getting a wee break!

Ds always had a fever when he was teething, with no other obvious viral symptoms. I once mentioned this to HV and she smiled and said "I know we are not supposed to say this, but some children just do".

i think my son has a low grade fever now of 37.8. He is teething a molar.
