Children's health

Both of my children are poorly, but i desperately need to get to some shops, can i take them, or is that bad parenting?

DD(3yrs) and DS(4m) and i have had this flu bug this week. I am now fine apart from a wheezy cough, DD is ok, just a little off colour and tired, but DS is snotty and has a rattly cough and feeling very sorry for himself.

You may have heard, but it is christmas next week and i still have some presents to buy and cards to post.

Would it be ok to wrap the children up (DS in the buggy and DD on the buggy board) and have a quick trip into town, or should i keep children at home and just have to apologise to people for late cards/presents (FIL is coming first thing tomorrow)

The fresh air will probably do them some good.

I'd leave them in the warm and sod the pressies. Poor dd on a buggy board all tired and weak - I'm filling up here . I am sure the rellies will understand.

I am going to have to take my poorly 6yo out later, although fortunately her baby sister is OK (so far). A prescrption needs to be collected and I need some bits for tomorrow. Experience tells me that fresh air will probably do her good, we won't be in any enclosed spaces for long and we'll be there and back within an hour.

I would post the cards but leave the presents for another day as that might take longer than a poorly preschooler could manage.

I think it's fine from an objective pov but having been in this situation, I think it will be a lot more trouble than it's worth! Getting tired and ill children to town and back is never a cinch.

I think I'd leave it for today.

There is nothing poor about my DD i tell you! Good farming stock that one (you should see her at ballet - hilarious) even with a temp of 40.5 she was marching round the house with a whistle

DS has got proper manflu though....

If FIL is coming first thing in the morning surely he could watch the children for you for an hour so you can whizz round to the post office/ shop etc.

Ill kids shouldn't be carted round the shops when they're poorly . They'll get cranky and you'll get stressed.

On-line shopping was invented to help mothers with ill DCs .

I have been stuck in for 3 weeks with dd's with chicken pox and then dd2 and i with vomiting bug, i have done my x-mas shopping online and food shop online, most shops do next day delivery so plenty of time to wrap before x-mas. I'm sure FIL will understand.

Hope they are all better soon.

I did some shopping online and waited about 3 weeks for anything to turn up - so I would recommend real shopping if you can, but maybe not today.

Unfortunately FIL is just stopping for breakfast on his way to see family as he does every couple of weeks throughtout the winter.

See, on the pro side, i'm thinking that DS will get a bit of fresh air and hopefully fall asleep (he is fighting sleep atm) and DD will get some fresh air (and a cake) then fall asleep when we get back. They haven't left the house since saturday.

But, if DD starts feeling rough when we are out, it will be hard work, DS could quite easily be coughing, spluttering and screaming the whole time.

But, we do live 2mins walk from town....

Marne we've been stuck in with the pox too.

I wouldn't bother if they are just going to end up all grumpy and cry at you the whole time.

Been stuck in forever here. This weekend dh is going to be on child duty as I frantically try to catch up on everything. You still have a weekend left.

If you're only 2mins away, I'd have a go. You might all be getting a bit stir crazy and the fresh air will probably do them & you good.

Maybe decide in advance what the priority is (e.g. post the cards if you've already spent hours writing them out) and then plan whole trip to take no longer than an hour.

Have you got a sling? You could carry DS (snuggled up to you would probably be better than in a pram) and cram DD in buggy, might be easier all round?

If it's a disaster run home, bolt the door, stick the telly on and hole up for the duration. FiL can spread the word to rellies that you haven't been able to do everything you wanted to, and anyone who has a problem with that can get a lump of coal.

Oh I'd risk it for 2 mins walk to town. The air will do them good. I thought you'd have to bus in to town or something .

If it's really just a 2 minute walk I'd give it a go. You can always turn back.

Very of those of you who can still rely on online deliveries. I am in Edinburgh and all our presents AND my new Christmas slobbing-out pyjamas are stuck in the Citylink and Royal Mail backlogs.

And there hasn't been a single Tesco delivery slot available to book since they cancelled my delivery at the last minute two weeks ago.

And I've pulled a muscle in my back hoisting the kids up and down the stairwell to shop for everything in small batches on foot. Humph!

Sorry OP, rant/hijack over.

Turkey - that is rough

I was justing getting ready to go (well, i had got off the sofa) and realised it is now chucking it down out there, so no not going now. None of us need to get wet.

Will get DH to get FIL something from Waitrose this evening instead.

Yes I wouldnt chance online deliveries this late in the day...tbh the fresh air and a nice milshake and cake as a treat will do you all good ...

We left the house to do the horses (i have been every day, but dcs have stayed at home with DH) but today decided that a bit of fresh air may help. DD came out on the yard for 10mins and has perked up a lot, and DS is having a good nap.

Lucybrad - i cancelled our Dr appointment the other day as i decided that DS was a bit better and i didn't want to spread our germs. It is difficult to know how infectious we are at this stage, and how likely we are to pass things on when just popping in and out of places. Would hate to think we had made someone ill though.
