Ds1 is 7yo. He started feeling shivery on Saturday evening, ie 48 hours ago. He felt sick and had a headache as well, but slept all night and was only sick once on Sunday morning. He seemed fine all Sunday till the night when he woke feverish again at about 11pm, had some nurofen and then he was sick once more on waking this morning. He's felt quite poorly on and off all day and had a temp around 38 and a half, same as the previous two evenings/nights.

He has been eating on and off and keeping things down but very pale, not much appetite.

Tonight he went to bed without any supper, about an hour ago, and I just took his temp again and it was 39.1...gave him 10ml of calpol, he says his tummy was hurting earlier but isn't now, however his head hurts again. He says it isn't too bad, just a bit. He can do the chin to chest thingy. He;s a bit out of it though.

I'm not very happy that the temp is going UP rather than down and he seems to be getting worse.

Any ideas as to what this might be? He doesn't seem to have any other symptoms apart from on and off tummy ache, feeling sick and headaches.

I am a bit rubbish at these random viruses.
Thankyou for any replies that prevent me panicking Smile

Have a look here for advice on what to do when a child is feverish.

i would ring NHS direct or your local out of hours doctor, or a walk-in centre if you have one?
i would be worried that the temp isn't doing down too. does the medication bring it down?

I would definitely go to GP tomorrow, and if you have out of hours doc would ask them to come around tonight.

If his temp goes over 40 then take him to a&e. Better safe than sorry.

Oh thankyou. I'm sure he has had weirdy viruses in the past that got worse before getting better iyswim...sort of deceptive.

I will check the link, thankyou very much. I have the OOH number in case he gets worse.

The meds do seem to bring it down, he had nurofen the last two nights but I wonder if that was what made him sick (empty stomach, not had it before) so tried calpol instead just now.

Nurofen is best after a meal. It is one of the side effects of ibuprofen, upset tummies.

Hope he is feeling better tomorrow.

Thankyou so much. I'm glad I didn't imagine it about the ibuprofen.

Poor love is still sleeping, quite difficult to wake but I think he is just exhausted.

Temp now down to 38.5 so progress being made - he had his socks on and a duvet earlier! Now just t shirt, shorts and cotton sheet.

I read your link which is very, very sad - I had seen it before about the little boy. Just such a terrifying thing to happen to anyone. Poor little love.
