Diarrhoea in 8mo old - should I restrict food?

My DS has had frequent watery poos for the past 36-48 hrs. He also has some sort of cold - snotty nose, minor cough, sounds a bit hoarse. Bit of a temp 2 nights ago, but not since.

I've still been offering him his 3 meals & 3 bottles a day, and boob in the middle of the night and just before breakfast. His appetite is almost the same as normal and pretty much eats/drinks it all with no coercion from me.

However, as his bum is still runny (and starting to get a bit sore dispite my best efforts and industrial amounts of sudocrem!), I was wondering if I should be restricting food a little or giving specifically v plain food to give his tummy a chance to 'chill' so to speak.

What do you think? Posting here as I don't think it's worth bothering gp with yet!

It is advised to offer starchy foods first e.g. pasta, potatoes, toast, rice, etc. Offer rehydration drinks if required e.g. dioralyte

treatment for diarrhoea

my gp advised me just to feed ds as normal when he had diarrhoea at 9 months old. the body will just get rid of any nasties and that can take up to 2 weeks in small children. just make sure he drinks enough and you will be fine.

Of course - the nhs site, d'oh Must go on mumsnet less, tis becoming first port of call for everything!!

Will continue to offer food, maybe just up the starchy carbs proportion a bit. He's been having regular sips of water from his sippy cup so he's ok hydration wise.

Thanks for prompt responses.

Have recently seen doctor about my ds' bad tum, and she says they no longer recommend "starvation" to cure bugs (my mum always taught us to stop eaing to let the bug die. If child is eating and drinking (although milk and dairy and acidic foods such as OJ can make it worse) then keep it up.
