Toddler moaning in pain and high temp - any thoughts

DS suddenly taken ill. Fell asleep in the car and woke up at home with temp. Took it - its 39 - and he has been constantly moaning in pain. I think its his stomach.

NHS direct said leave it an hour and if he's no better call the OOH doctor. Any thoughts? I've never seen him so poorly and of course DH is away and I'm on my own.

What does Calpol do?

Had calpol 45 minutes ago and his temp is now 39.2.

I get really anxious about his health and I tend to overreact but I might call dr now.

You sound worried - call the OOH anyhow (it'll take a while to be seen).

In the mean time, strip him to his nappy, try cool/tepid sponging and put a fan on to make him more comfy.

I called out of hours and they sent us to emergency GP at hospital. Turns out he's got tonsillitis. Annoyingly I had taken him to GP about his throat on Friday afternoon and it was fine then! Glad I took him, he was definitely not right and tonsillitis does seem to make toddlers really poorly. GP said there are glands in his tummy which will be swollen which is probably why he was complaining of pain there.

Now the fun of persuading him to take the antibiotics...

Thanks for replying to me.

My sympathies.

One of my children had tonsillitis and I was totally amazed at how ill he was - very high temperature and clearly in severe pain.

I hope yours is on the mend now with his anti-biotics. It is a relief to get a diagnosis.

He's perked up a bit now he's had calpol, nurofen and antibiotics. Had me scared there - certainly appeared far sicker than when he had pneumonia!

Good mummy instincts to know that something was definitely wrong

Your next challenge will be getting him to take his ABs after his miraculous recovery in the next day or so

Hope you both get a good night's sleep.
