Recommend "books to read to your children"

Each time we (me and my 6 and 4 year old) go to the library we (well OK I) choose a chapter book for me to read to them, and then they get ones they want to 'read' themselves

Anyway I'm currently reading 101 Dalmatians - it's going down well - but wondering which book to go for next time.

What chapter books have gone down well with your children?

We are curently reading 'My naughty little sister' but that might be a bit too young for yours

The Sophie series by Dick King Smith- I've just read 6 of these to my 4 yr old and she loved them.

They are boys - I wonder how they'd take to stories about girls? I'll give it a go as I'd hate them not to read something in the furture because it has a girl in it (mind you the 4 year old thinks all girls are yucky at the moment!!)

How to Train your Dragon books (probably more for the 6 y/o - but no more complex than 101 dalmations)

Captain Underpants (though again I struggle to read these out loud without getting the giggles)

DD didn't like Mr Gum but I know it is enormously popular.

We also have a book of Welsh and one of Ethiopian folk tales which make excellent bedtime stories.

Mr Gum is my 6yr old's favourite.

When DS1 and DS2 were 4 and 6 they used to enjoy the Ladybird versions of classics such as Treasure Island, Wind in the Willows, Three Musketeers etc. Like this. Now they are 6 and 8 they are reading them themselves so double the value!

Excellent - loads to take from

To be honest I'm not too sure my 4 year old follows 101 Dalmatians, but it's a good excuse for a cuddle!

Neither boy can read - 6 year old is trying really hard but is finding it tough going - so I want to make sure I can read him something he finds interesting to keep his interest in books alive - want to avoid the idea that books are hard work

Maybe get 'My naughty little sister and bad Harry' first? We have had the audio book cd from the library and is far more tolerable on long car journeys than tumble tots songs etc.
