Watching with interest! Have an almost nine year old who loved Wimpy Kid and is still into Horrid Henry. Bought him Good Night Mr Tom but it is unread. Will read it to him I think.

Tells me he is not ready for Harry Potter. Didn't think of Adrian Mole.

I bought him the first Beast Quest one but not interested as yet anyway.

Grandson loves Wimpy Kid.
Doing Goodnight Mr. Tom - watched the video for our WW2 project.

We're on Beast Quest at the moment - 3 for 2 in WHSmith.

I was going to recommend The Black Riders by Violet Needham, which is a wonderful book, but basically you'll have a hell of a job getting hold of it and I'm afraid I'm not prepared to sell or lend my copy...

Mr Gum books are fab - make me cry laughing.

My 9 yo loves World According to Humphrey series.

Also Michael Morpugo, though be choosy as older end can be a bit much.

David Walliams have been a hit. Loved them both equally, though Mr Stink a bit more mainstream.

Take it you've done Jeremy Strong?

There are three of these: Johnny and the Bomb

and two of these Solomon Snow

Also Cosmic recommended on here - DS loved it.

Did he like Percy Jackson - DS has gone on to read Rosemary Sutcliff's version of the Battle of Troy and Odysseus on the basis of these!

Must be some stories about Vikings, not fantasy, or other historical adventures. Apparently there's a serious called "Roman Mysteries"..well that's what my Amazon search pulled up!!

and look at this review!!
This review is from: The Enemies of Jupiter: Roman Mysteries 7 (The Roman Mysteries) (Paperback)
One of the best so far!Im nine years old and LOVED IT! The four detectives(Nubia,Lupus,Johnathon and Flavia)go to Rome because the Emperor Titus has a secret misson for them:to find who opened the Pandora's Box. But Johnathon is distracted by a secret mission of his own! He is trying to get his supposeingly 'Dead' mother to meet his father who is there to cure pationts with the fever. But then everything goes terribly wrong...

Demon headmaster series - Gillian Cross?

Diamond Brothers series - Antony Horowitz?

(Is Alex Rider too difficult at the moment?)

AB - He might be too young for the Alex Rider series, but the Diamond Brother series are aimed at a younger target audience IIRC. DS started these at 9 and gravitated onto the 'older' AH books more recently (now 10.5)

Try A Million Footsteps - it's a proper adventure story about two boys travelling across France to find their little sister - no monsters or dragons or wizards or witches, just good old fashioned stuff!

My D likes dipping in to the Roman Mysteries series, in between other reads. We got it from the Book People.
Has anyone mentioned a Series of unfortunate events?
