My 9 year old DD is currently being enchanted by TumTum and Nutmeg.

They are quite an easy read but the stories are exciting, interspersed with charming illustrations. Lovely looking books for gifts too.

My dd1 is 10 on Saturday (eek!) and has recently read:

Jacqueline Wilson
Willard Price
And is eyeing up my Ursula Le Guin Earthsea books.

She's quite a good reader though and likes adventure type "boy" books just as much as girl ones!

I'd probably opt for a High School Musical annual, OP. Most of the books suggested here are too advanced (long) for an average 9yo reader, I humbly suggest.

My just 9 year old dd is loving anything by Jacqueline Wilson. 'Hetty Feather' looks great - about a little Victorian orphan.

Just started reading hetty Feather with my nearly 8 year old DD. We are both loving it and I"m NOT a Jacqueline Wilson fan as a rule. Its hardback too so would make a good gift book.

Agree with dizzymac re Hetty Feather - it is different from her other books, and I've given it to other children as a present because it's a nice-looking hardback. Also was on special offer in Waterstones a while ago, which helps
