She might like the Percy Jackson books about a boy who is half human, half Greek god

or try Julia Jarman's time travelling cat.

Sarah Matthias has a couple of really good books centred around the middle ages: the lateest one is Tom Fletcher and the three wise men. (the first in that series is Tom Fletcher and the Angel of Death) they're murder mysteries, so good if she enjoys the detective part of the Roman Mysteries.

I enjoyed some of Rosemary Sutcliff's books (others are probably better later) and Barbara Leonie Picard's Ransom for a Knight at that age. Joan Aiken's Dido Twite series is set in alternative history, and there's also a separate book called Midnight is a Place. Though not everything's in print it's available quite cheap secondhand. I've just ordered a replacement copy of Sutcliff, The Armourer's House for about £3 as mine is missing.

Secondhand books online via Amazon, where it says used copies available, or www.abebooks.com. Some of the abebooks sellers reduce postage costs for 2 or more books, but many books have copies available for under £3 most of which is postage.

Some Sutcliffs are good for 9 year olds I think, I liked The Armourer's House (can't remember time period, medieval or Tudor) and The Queen Elizabeth Story, both feature main characters about the age of your dd.
