I have just discovered that the beautiful edition with Jan Pienkowski's illustrations has been reissued here for anyone looking for a last minute Christmas present.

I love that book. I have an old beaten up copy somewhere. In fact, it was that book that made me start searching out more of Joan Aiken's books and now I have quite a few

oh notanotter, they are joy on paper.

my favourite thing about them is that the parents are included in the magic -even as a child i liked this and disliked the E Nesbit version of life where parents were excluded.

Can anyone remember which is the collection of her stories that has the story of the stick that seems to have a life of its own and turns into a sort of chrysalis?

I love all her books - especially the ones with Dido Twite but agree that A Necklace of Raindrops and A small pinch of weather are excellent - will have to see if I still have my old copies somewhere ....

Thank you for this. I have been buying second hand copies of her books for my DD (2.3) so she'll have them when she's older. I love them all. I just hope DD does too.

The book arrived this afternoon and she has finished reading this book and said it is an amazing book and wants it to be on her window sill so she can read it again and again.Thanks.

I loved the collections of stories. Many of my favourites in collections like All But a Few, A Small Pinch of Weather etc were about the Armitage family, and I discovered that these have all been collected together in one volume.

I also love the Dido Twite books etc, and recently learned that there are 11 in the series including two I bought but haven't read and two I didn't own.

I've bought the Armitage family stories and the two final Dido books new, and several later collections of stories secondhand - you can get them quite cheaply via abebooks or amazon marketplace (I still have all the ones that were published in Puffin when I was a child, I think).
