Poetry for pre-schoolers - with good pictures!

Can anyone recommend anything suitable?

There's plenty of stuff on amazon but I don't know what the pictures are like and they will be all-important for my lo.

Try Usborne. I've got a couple of beautiful ones from there.

The new StoryBox books have a "Time for a Rhyme feature" - a read-aloud celebration of poetry and art for childrenn, the first one out in september is illustrated by Quentin Blake. Can be used on their own and as a teaching aid, as they are in line with the national curriculum, hope that is a help

There is a superb series of anthologies edited by Jill Bennett with illustrations by Nick Sharratt. The poems are very short, and mainly accessible to 2, 3 and 4 year olds.

Nursery rhymes - but I'm sure you have already thought of this. Ditto rhyming stories by Lynley Dodd, Julia Donaldson, Ian Whybrow et al.

Some of Michael Rosen's poety works for this age group, but I think you are best looking carefully, as lots of his work is for slightly older children.

"All Join In" - Quentin Blake. Brilliant, short, fun poems.

I can probably think of a lot more if these don't appeal; I enjoy reading poetry to my DD when she sits still long enough to listen, and read a lot of children's literature for my own pleasure.

Many thanks for all these. Yes, we are doing nursery rhymes, though I am still looking for a book with good pictures, and ideally, a nice cd. The Usborne Nursery Rhyme sticker book has been a big hit.

Our best books at the moment are all rhyming ones rather than proper poetry. I got the Skipping Rope Snake last week which is closer to poetry but I think only bits are good.

When there's a rhyme he's more likely to join in with the rhyming word, which is good as I think his speech may be a bit delayed. So we have Room on the Broom, The Gruffalo, One Mole Digging a Hole, Chocolate Moose for Greedy Goose; Walking through the Jungle, The Animal Boogie Woogie; Tiddler (a bit advanced). Any more like this would be great too. We

Other fantastic ones were The Story of Wool and The Beeman - which are not only very memorable rhyming stories but interesting non fiction too. Would really love to hear of more like those if anyone knows of something.

Michael Rosen's Alphabet Poem with illustrations by Herve Tullet is excellent, bit surreal and not twee.

IT;s one of DD's favourite books and she even recites bits of it to us.

Duck in a Truck (Jez Alborough - not sure about spelling) is a lovely rhyming book ideal for joining in.
