Which Dahl books at which age?

DD7 found a copy of Matilda the other day and started reading it and got a real scare because the story was inappropriate for her age
I read it to see, and agreed with DD that it was definately too scary!
So my question is; which Dahl stories would you let your 7 year old read?
Up until now, she has happily read Charlie & the chocolate factory, James & the giant peach, and The magic finger...
Just don't want to make the same mistake again!!!

Fantastic Mr Fox?

But then I would have let a 7yo read Matilda, so I am probably a Bad Example

Hope DD isn't just being over-sensitive then!

i would say fantastic mr fox, the enormous crocodile, george's marvellous medicine, the twits, esio trot (and the magic finger she's read). if she's read charlie and james then she might be okay with the bfg, but i wouldn't do any of the others yet, just because of the level of understanding: and yes, matilda is horrible for that age.

kids do vary a lot in what they find scary. Definitely don't try The Witches yet.

The Twits isn't scary but its horrid.

The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me is a nice one.
And Esio Trot.

I don't think Danny the Champion of the World is scary - its unlike most Dahls in being quite real life - but I think aimed at slightly older than 7.

Yes, would definitely avoid The Witches.
