Anyone have any idea what this book was called?

I read a book when I was a child abotu a girl who went to stay with some family or something. In the book she used to have a cat that woudl write in the soot in the fireplace.
At the end, or near the end there were white horses that were in the sea.
The room she slept in was a tower of a castle I think and her clothes used to always be laid out in the morning as if by magic.
I cant remember much else, but I desperately want to get it to read to my DD.

It is called The Little White Horse.
