I know this probably seems a really daft question but where do you get you children’s books from?

My 8 (nearly 9) year old is starting to re read Harry Potter which is spurring me into looking at what else to get for her, plenty of great suggestions on this section!

But I can see it getting very ££££ - I’ve got a basket of £60+ worth on the book people based on suggestions on other threads, with no guarantees she’ll like what I’ve picked. The equivalent in waterstones would be several times that amount (and yes I feel guilty using online retailers!)

Our local library isn’t great, very limited selection Roald Dahl etc. I know we’re lucky to have one but last time we went she came away with nothing.

She’s at the stage where she devouring books. How do you all keep them well stocked without breaking the bank??

I always have a quick look at the children's books in the local charity shops when I go past. You can pick them up for 50p or ÂŁ1.

Bought a few books here and there from various charity shops, can’t say they’ve been a great source.

I’ve just had a look on gumtree & Facebook selling and it’s 99% David Walliams/ wimpy kid/Harry Potter/ rainbow magic 🤦‍♀️

You can reserve books for free from the wider library service and collect them from your local branch

You need to go to your library's website, find the titles you want and reserve them to be picked up at your branch. If your library service has a bigger branch nearby, you could go there for some more ideas.

The book people website can be quite good if you're buying series/sets of books. Sometimes I've found 2nd hand books on FB and eBay. Where I live (Surrey) you can also go online to the county library page and reserve books, even if they're not available in your local library they will send them from other libraries in the county for free. You get an email when they're ready to collect.

Another vote for the library, using their ordering service if necessary.

We live close to the edge of a local authority area so we have library cards with both local authorities. One allows children to borrow 10 books at a time, and the other allows 30, so it's easy enough to ensure she always has something new to read, even if we can't get to the library every week.

She typically reads 4-8 books per week, so there's no way I'm buying all of those!
