Summer Reading Challenge

My DD 8 always does the library's Summer Reading Challenge (6 books over 6 weeks) which keeps the reading going over the holidays!

This year she has read more challenging stuff like Phoenix and the Carpet, Five Children and It and also loved the The Dragonfly Pool by Eva Ibbotson, she reads these to me so I can check comprehension - but it will take 2-3 weeks to get through a book.

What can she read independently that are similar stories/style but she can whizz through a bit quicker so as to meet the Challenge goals?

Some of the Michael Morpurgo books (the ones that are not too upsetting for an 8 year old) arn't as many pages.

Matilda Roald Dahl

I can't remember how thick The Railway Children is, I know dd had an abridged version at one point.

PIppi Longstocking

I loved What Katy Did at her age but it would take longer to read. Is Milly Molly Mandy a bit young?

Have been through all the Roald Dahl books, Railway Children she gave up on. Michael Murpurgo is a good idea - she has read some of his, Butterfly Lion, Why the Whales Came and Alone on a Wild Wild Sea which she loved, will see what else he can offer.

She's been through Worst Witch, How to train your Dragon, Secret Seven, Treehouse series. She likes stories set in boarding schools thought about Mallory Towers - but its a bit old fashioned.

Street Child, by Berlie Doherty. Not like the books you have mentioned, but a modern classic and the girls in the library where I volunteer love it!
