DD is 9 and likes books that are rooted in the real world - no schoolboy wizards for her, thank you grin. So Wimpy Kid, Big Nate. Jacqueline Wilson etc. She also likes graphic novels such as Roller Girl and Raina Telgemeir books.

Does anyone have any suggestions, because I am fast running out of ideas!

thanks! She's read some Cathy Cassidy and enjoyed those. Some of these are packaged in a very 'girly' way which would put her off but having had a browse I think she would enjoy Gwynweth Rees.

Have a look at Ross Welford. Stories are set in real world but with excitement within them. Time travel or invisibility, all very believable though! I bought a set and have been reading them as I have a sensitive 9 year old. Have thoroughly enjoyed them!

Might she like some of the old favourites - Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House in the Big Woods & sequels, Ballet Shoes & all the other various Noel Streatfields, all the various (non magic!) school stories - Chalet School, Jennings, etc etc.
