Hear hear for The Saturdays (Elizabeth Enright), the whole series is terrific, some of my favourite ever children's books. I don't think they are in print in the UK but you would find secondhand copies.

For any child with an interest in ponies, Ruby Ferguson's Jill books are very funny, pure wish fulfillment!
