What are you reading to your 6 year old boys?

Or do you still read to your 6 year olds?
DS is nearly 6, he loves Roald Dahl, what can I read to him that's a bit similar? Is David walliams a bit old for him yet?
He's not a fab reader but likes being read to.

DS is a slow reader and impatient, he still finds it very difficult and a ginormous ballache to do his school reading.

However, he still likes being read to, mostly just before bed. He likes Mathilda (not finished yet), Paddington books, classic fairytales (we have just started Aladdin). And any non-fiction; he has a book called The History of Flight given to him by my dad and he can listen to that over and over.

I read to my six year old every night, he’d be appalled if I didn’t! He reads one story then I read one, at the moment he’s working his way through the Zaz Zoo stories that he reads and to him I’m reading a mixture of Roald Dahl, Captain Underpants and Horrid Henry. I spotted some Famous Five that he could manage the other day but despite my best efforts he’s not interested in them. He does still enjoy things like Julia Donaldson and The Dinosaurs that pooped too

Mine turned seven last week, we still read to him every night although he is a good reader. We have been reading him the "How to Train your Dragon" books for the last few months. He struggled with the first one as the film's/TV series are so total different that he was confused at first but he quickly got his head around the differences and love them.

Thank you, I asked a couple of friends with similar aged DC, they don't read anymore, but I believe their DC's are very good readers and would read for pleasure.
Mine enjoys being read to, but limits himself to Biff and Chip when he's reading, even when I tell him he can read absolutely anything to me.
I'd like to find him a couple of new chapter book series to get into, I'll google these suggestions. Thanks

I think we will be reading to DS for ever, he loves it.

I have read one David Williams which was Grandad great escape but the death/ending went over his head and I had to spell it out.

Bit late now but the christmasaurus book by Tom Fletcher was great.

At the moment I am reading him the first How To Train Your Dragon and DH is reading Swallows and amazons and he is loving both.

DH also read an old Robin Hood with him which was great until the last chapter when everyone died including Marion and Robin but a more child friendly version might be good.

DS2 adored how to train your dragon at 6ish. He says that the books are far better than the films.

He also really loved the monster and chips series by David O’Connell. He’s read it several times (and will still re-read then at 8).

He liked guy bass’s frog books too. He thought they were hilarious.

He loved the Garth Nix Seventh Tower series, which I think he/we (probably mostly me) read when he was in Y2.

Personally I hate the David Walliams books but DS likes some of them.

He can read anything he likes now at 8 (Y4), but still loves being read too. I really enjoy reading to him too. We like to do a mother and son book club .

I always suggest this on MN, but get him a subscription to The Phoenix comic. It’s great and DS2 looks forward to reading it every week. He keeps all his copies in a box and re-reads them regularly.

It’s a great way to encourage more reluctant readers as it’s funny and the comics within it are short (and full of pictures). So they don’t necessarily see it as proper reading.

There’s also a book club feature in some issues. DS2 has found some great books through that and was keen to read them. For example, The Dark Lord series is brilliant. Your DS might enjoy that too - it’s funny (even for parents).

I don't read to her every night, due to time constraints but we still love sharing books.
We've just finished the 2nd Narnia book which she adored.
She's also reading the enchanted wood with nanna.
Have a look at Jeremy Strong too. Recommended by her teacher and she is loving them. I haven't read them with her but from what I have seen they would work just as well as shared reading.

Have been reading Edge Chronicles (interspersed with other things) to DS2 since he was 5.5!

Second (or more) How to Train your Dragon, and have also read chunks of dinosaur fact books. Dahl, How to train your Dragon, Blyton, various bits by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntire, King-Smith.
Astrosaurs, beast quest, or Magic Tree House to encourage him to read bits when he wakes up in the morning.

I HATE reading Walliams, Captain Underpants, Wimpy Kid etc to my 9 yr old. Don't get started on those yet!

My ds is 6 and doesn't really read to himself yet unless it's a school book. But he loves being read too every night- he loved the first 2 Harry Potter books ( the lovely illustrated versions)

He found George's Marvellous Medicine hilarious.

He loves the 5 minute star Wars book and 5 minute batman one - they are truly terrible but he adores them!

He still like picture book - he has a younger brother and we all read together. Eg - the runaway dinner / Billy's Bucket are two faves.

As well as reading to mine a few times a week, we often listen to audio books in the car and they're allowed an audio book playing on CD quietly in their bedrooms while they're falling asleep.
Over the Easter hols we completed the entire set of Just William books which my DS loves. He's also into The Faraway Tree at the moment.

I remember reading them the Paddington books by Michael Bond, the Moomintroll books by Tove Jansson, and the Professor Branestawm books by Norman Hunter, and Stig of the Dump by Clive King. they loved all those. I can remember reading the two younger ones the Cressida Cowell How to Train Your Dragon books as well, though they may have been a bit older by then.

Dirty Bertie books are funny. And books by Jeremy Strong. The Tom Gates books by Liz Pinchion are nice to read aloud - Tom is a boy of ten but the stories are funny to re aloud to younger readers. My daughter enjoyed the Usbourne Abridged versions of Charles Dickens and Shakespeare at that age.

My son has recently enjoyed King Coo, Dinosaur Cove, Team Hero, Unfortunately the Milk, various Greek and Norse myths and Cakes in Space.
I'd second a subscription to the Phoenix. My DS loves getting his in the post each week and has just started to read bits of it to himself and his little bro.

enid blyton, roald dahl, jacqueline wilson and michael morpurgo are firm favourites in our household. for enid blyton i'd start with the wishing chair series and then faraway tree before famous five as they are geared at 5 - 7 year olds. the chronicles of narnia, 5 children and it, the secret garden, peter pan, bridge to terebithia and harry potter are great books. fairytales such as hansel and gretel, jack and the beanstalk and little red riding hood go down well aswell as the just so stories, the sophie in the saddle books, the elves and the shoemaker, the enormous turnip, billy goats gruff and the land of stories series.
