For an 8 yr old but one that's also going to take more than half an hour to read.
Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried the Fighting Fantasy books? Forest of Doom is good. You choose your own adventure and collect things on the way like potions and money. My boys loved them at 8 and still likes them now at 10.

You need dice and a pencil.

Thanks. I've had a look and they seem really good.
I've ordered a couple.

Tried the Clever Tykes books? Mine love them as bedtime stories. We do a chapter a night.
