DS struggled with reading during the first two years of school, and then progressed a lot in year 2. He is now in year 3, and I feel that he is slightly behind his peers, even though he is labeled a free reader (school say they are free readers after reading through ORT stage 12).

He enjoys reading, but is easily put off if he can't understand the vast majority of words.

He likes chapter books, and books with illustrations (not necessarily colour) on most pages. He is currently reading David Walliams' Demon Dentist, which is a huuuuuge step up for him, and is loving it, despite the challenging vocabulary and the length of the book. What he likes is the short chapters and the regular illustrations which break it all up well.

Can anyone recommend anything please? The other David Walliams books I've seen don't have as many illustrations, which I know will put him off. The Worst Witch stories re too text heavy. He has read Roald Dahl, Claude, the Johnny Duddle pirates books, all of the Zoe's Rescue Zoo books and some of the Battersea Dogs and cats home books too.

Arabel and Mortimer books by Joan Aiken are very slim. Beast Quest? Astrosaurs? Dinosaur Cove? Ben 10 adventures? Sophie books by Dick King-Smith?

Search Tom Palmer on Amazon - lots of stories about football and rugby with large text, short chapters etc.

The Barry Loser books by Jim Smith. They're Wimpy Kid for younger readers.

Also try him on Captain Underpants.
