Nice book set for 10 year old DD

DD has told her grandparents that she would like books for her 10th birthday present. This, of course, has prompted them to ask me to suggest something that she would like and hasn’t already read.

We don’t actually own a huge number of books as we tend to go to the library frequently –and don’t have masses of storage space—so I thought it might be an idea if they could get her a “nice” box set.

The only problem is what to get? DD’s recent favourites include Malory Towers, Trebizon, Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates, various Jacqueline Wilson, Dork Diaries. She has read the Harry Potter books so many times she basically knows them by heart! Her favourite book (according to her) is Witch Week by Diane Wynne Jones, but other books by DWJ have been more hit and miss. She read a couple of the Roman mystery books, but then lost interest. She has recently read and enjoyed a few classics: Secret Garden, Ballet Shoes, Anne of Green Gables, Heidi – so I wondered whether a set of “classics” might work? The only other thing I can think of is that she seems to like books set in schools, and whether there is any others she’s not read but might like?

TIA for any suggestions for box sets/nice collections that she might like?

Eva Ibbotsen? Book People is the best place to look- you can click on boxed sets and it will show you all the ones they have.

Get them to have a look at the Folio Society website. Endless choice of brilliant and beautifully produced books; Ursula K. Le Guin, Joan Aiken, John Wyndham, Douglas Adams, Philip Pullman etc. Sure to be something she'd love.

My 9 year old loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder series. Also Roald Dahl if she hasn't already got them, or the David Walliams books are great - Boy in the Dress and Mr Stink especially.
There are various box sets of Michael Morpurgo books which seem to go down well with this age range.
If she likes JW but wants something slightly more grown up, Cathy Cassidy seems to be the next stage up.

The Silver Brumby books by Elyne Mitchell? (if she likes horses)
Little Women etc.
I have boys but would she like the Rick Riordan books on Percy Jackson? And his Kane Chronicles etc? Mine love those.
