Fantasy/horror for 11yo who prefers books shorter than HP?

Looking for book recommendations for my niece (almost 11) who likes fantasy/horror (and loves Harry Potter) but only made it through 1,5 Harry Potter books. She doesn't like girly/romance type books and is also not interested in detective/adventure stories such as Famous Five.

My own ds10 loves the John Stephens trilogy (Emerald Atlas etc) but these would be too advanced for my niece's reading level/patience, as would eg The Hunger Games. So something with shorter chapters but not at the expense of good exciting/thrilling stories.

My ds has suggested John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series as a potentially good fit, but I would love more ideas! Any suggestions?

Fantasy not horror: has she read The Dark is Rising or Wolves of Willoughby Chase? Not quite such huge fat books, but just as exciting.

Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series? It's fantasy with scary bits, slightly more manageable size than HP.

Darren shan is v good for this type of reader. The zom-b series is almost all out now so she could start on that and get to read the last one as it is published. They are released individually (12 in series) then in 3s (1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12) so getting the individual ones might be better. He has done quite a few other series in the same format

How about The Tripods?

The seventh tower books or the Mister Monday books by Garth Nix.

And if you know London quite well there is a trilogy starting with a book called Stone Heart that is set in London which she might like because she'll be able to identify all the locations.

Have you seen Circus of the Unseen? That should fit the bill!

Yep, Darren Shan would be good for horror - Cirque du Freak is the series I've read.

For a standalone fantasy I love The House on Falling Star Hill.

She'd probably like The Witch Trade series too.

There are two books about an 11 yo called Samuel Johnson by John Connolly which are very age appropriate and quite amusing, and one by the same author called The Book Of Lost Things which is still age appropriate but is much darker.
