Upload pics of your World Book Day costumes for chance to win £100 of books for your school's library

World Book Day is looming (Thursday 5 March) and we're running a competition with Random House Children's books to celebrate the publication of a very special WBD Dinosaur That Pooped short story. We want you to show us your WBC costume ideas (past and present) to help inspire other mumsnetters when it comes to creating their costumes this year.

We'd like you to upload a photo of your costume onto this thread with basic instructions of how you made it (or put it together). We're going to be using some of the designs to make exclusive Mumsnet how-to videos by our production team which will be uploaded to our Youtube channel so others can replicate your costume.

One lucky winner (chosen by Random House Children's books) will receive £100 worth of books for a school library of their choice, whilst ten runners-up will receive a prize package containing a copy of the Dinosaur that Pooped a Planet signed by the authors, a copy of the Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas, a copy of the Dinosaur that Pooped the Past and a Pooping Dinosaur plush toy.

Ok, last year DD1 had traditional tales (or for anyone else else my age, nursery rhymes and fairy tales. We did Little red riding hood. She already had the dress (traditional Italian costume from my MIL's region), I made the cloak from a Slanket

DS had Alice in Wonderland as a theme and he chose the Mad March Hare

I forgot, DS's costume was normal clothes, bunny ears courtesy of Lindt and a Pom pom my friend made for him.

Egyptian costume - adapted a free beach kaftan which had been a magazine freebie, over leggings, sandals, belted with gold ribbon crisscrossed.
Necklace - cut a crescent shape from gold card and decorated with sunflower seeds painted with nailvarnish and glued on, plus a few sequins. Punched holes in the top and threaded ribbon through to fasten. Head dress was more gold card and sunflower seeds painted with gold nailvarnish. Bit of eyeliner.

My twin boys went as owl babies when they were in reception. Sainsburys had dark brown pillow cases (in pairs - handy that!) in the sale. I made arm and head holes in them and painted feet, branches, wings and a feathery chest on the front in poster paint. We had 'geek' pebble glasses which I popped the lenses out of. I made owl ears and a beak out of funky foam and glued to the glasses frame. Uber cute. They carried the books.
Last year they went as the littlest vampire which was school uniform, a left over Halloween cape, a waistcoat made of a bin liner (one did two kids) and a bow tie stapled to their shirt made of funky foam again. I made their face pale with make up and gave them dark eye bags and red lips. All this in the 15 mins they were eating breakfast! I printed the cover of the book and taped it to an annual. One of their teachers said they about the only kid not in a premade costume.

Willy Wonka. He went in jeans, a striped T shirt and a blazer. I made 'sweets' out of DD's out grown babygros and a cane with plastic ice cream cones on the end.

DS helped me make the hat out of papier mache. Which was a nightmare. But he also made a golden ticket to put in his top pocket.It was nice that we made the costume together. :)

el quinto World Book Day is on 23rd April in many countries but not in the UK. I wish the UK would change over to 23rd April, there are some lovely traditions attached to that date.

I am gathering stuff for a Pippi Long stocking outfit for DD . Hopefully no sewing involved but the red wig is proving hard to source!

Miss does she have long enough hair for plaits? If so, get some spray in colour. Alternatively my SIL made a fantastic rapunzel plait using wool, which she attached to her daughter's pony tail. Plaits would be harder, but do-able of you made a cap from the body of a pair of ladies tights to attach the "wig" to.

Ooooh thanks Audit. DD has had allergic reactions to hair products in the past so I'd rather avoid dyes and sprays. Will try the tights-and-wool alternative that should keep me out of mischief.

This is my DS as Mr Stink.

He has some old trousers and a shirt on. I found a cheap blanket and glued felt cut out in the shapes of leaves to the back, then tied it round his waist with string. Making it look like he was sleeping in leaves!

I found a cheap father christmas wig/beard and combed black shoe polish through it, stuck in some feathers. Old Harry Potter glasses and his sisters 'dog on a lead'

I have namechanged for this so i'm not outed, is that ok?

My son's favourite at the time, Mr Gum.

Fur fabric cut into a beard and moustache with elastic around the back, with eyebrows to match (I can't remember how I attached those ), all dirtied up with marmite and chocolate spread. The top hat I made from black felt and cardboard, and attached elastic so it would stay on. Then the clothes were just old ill-fitting tatty things. I think I put some face paints around his eyes too, he can't have been that tired going to school. It didn't take long, just the top hat was a bit tricky, but everyone knew who he was which made him happy

This is my eldest son at last years World Book Day. He went as 'Big Skeleton' from Funny Bones which is one of his favourite books and also one of my favourite books from my childhood. We made a 'Little Skeleton' and 'Dog Skeleton' from a cardboard box and gave them moving joints. It took ages to cut the skeletons out from the cardboard as it was so thick, I was working well on into the Dark dark night.....!!

I asked what she wanted to be and she said 'The duck; the duck on every page'. She meant the Usborne duck.

I went to a charity shop and bought an adult yellow T-Shirt and a yellow skirt with lining. I sewed the neck until it was the right size. Then cut the skirt into panels. I made tubes for the arms, leaving an inch of fabric hanging past the seam so I could cut feather shapes and stitched then over the T-shirt arms. I then cut three layers of material and layered them, stitching them to the bottom of the T-Shirt and then cutting zigzags to represent feathers.

I ordered orange tights and a yellow baseball hat on t'internet. I crocheted a red beak to sew over the brim and stitched it on. The eyes and eyebrows were drawn on by sharpie.

My 4yo DS will be wearing a tiger onesie and going as the Tiger who came to Tea. That is about as far as my imagination runs :-( Either that or I recycle his Halloween skeleton outfit or his Fantastic Mr Fox from Roald Dahl day.

My 6 year old went as the cat in the hat - I sewed ( very badly) some blakc hairy fabric onto the bottom half of a pair of old trousers, and found a huge hairy jumper in a charity chop which I glued a piece of white material to the front of. Online I found a cat's tail ( about 2) which I attached to the back. We then made a huge stripy hat out of cardboard, and a big red bow out of an old T-shirt of Dad's. A bit of black and white face-paint and voila........Photo will follow if I can find one, but it was really easy and achievable even for me with very little crafting ability.

Last year my daughter went as Sophie from the tiger who came to tea. I bought a pair of thick white tights from tesco and some marker pens and we drew checks in pink and purple to create the tights. DD loved helping with this. I roughly altered a purple t shirt of mine to create her pinafore dress. She wore her school shoes and I tied her hair up with a purple ribbon and she took a toy tiger with her. Not uploading photos as don't want to be outed!

DS went as Asterix, wore a Viking helmet, red top with my black vest top over it, ordered a blonde moustache online. Created belt from pair of green tights and sewed on gold choc coin wrappers for the buttons.

I LOVE the "duck on every page" might steal that one!

We did Pippi Longstocking one year. We used that colour putty stuff to colour dd's hair red and make it into stiff plaits so they would turn upwards then added ribbons. I found an old white shirt then doctored a cotton dress, adding lace at the bottom and also sewing on red hearts. I then cut up two pairs of stripey tights in different colours and sewed 2 of the different legs together. Then tied green ribbons through her school shoes. Finally added her toy monkey and used face paint to draw Pippi's freckles.
