Books without baddies - for a v.sensitive 4/5 yr old!

My 4.5 yr old is going through a phase of being frightened of his own shadow and any story or film or even CBeebies programme is rejected if there's any hint of scariness about it.

Can anyone recommend done books I can get for bedtime that won't give him nightmares!? A lot of books for the post-toddler group seem to involve dragons, monsters, pirates etc all of which are out of favour atm. Also no references to death, orphans, sickness or unhappiness of any sort. Poor child is driving himself grey with anxiety!!

Mr Men/little Misses? I know they're not chapter books but my DD loved them at that age.

Apart from Mr Mischief - my very sensitive and anxious 3.5 year old was very distressed at how nasty he is

He's a big fan of the Topsy and Tim books, I second those. Also the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes - lovely stories

Milly Molly Mandy is very tame.

Or Alfie stories by Shirley Hughes.

Also, does he like factual books? My 4 year old loves things like 1000 things that go, and some book about really big ships. They bore my brains out, but they're not scary!

Bloody sodding Postman Pat stories are interminably long but the baddest character in them is Ted 'bodger' Glen. Ds1 (4) thinks they're amazing.

Paddington. You can get them in picture book form, rather than the original paperbacks which I think would be hard going for a 4.5 year old.

Sheltie series, by Peter Clover, is a daily innocuous series about a Shetland pony. They are however paperbacks, with no pictures!

Your DS might like Where's Wally? too.

The Little Animal Ark series and the Frog and Toad books are very gentle books. Don't think there are any scary bits in them
