May not help with "updating" but mine is mostly into the ladybird well loved tales. She loves the repetition in three little pigs, chicken Licken etc

Otherwise, Super Daisy, Green Eggs and Ham, Paper Dolls, Jack and the Flum Flum Tree.

My DD is just 5 and is loving How to train your dragon. We have also enjoyed quite a few books by Dick King Smith like the sheep pig (made into the film Babe).

DD loves the Dr Seuss books - got a gorgeous box set from The Works on a xmas bargain thread!

Also, any Julia Donaldson books (we have most of them!).

Mr Men and little Miss - these then come in useful once they start to read themselves.

Books about pirates, dinosaurs, dragons, ballet and princesses.

Oh, and space Smile

+1 for You Choose, brilliant my DD will look at this in the car

Any of the Kipper books + Lullabyhulabaloo by Mick Inkpen (great name)

+1 for Mr Men & Little Miss

The Childs Play 'classics' with flaps are good eg Gingerbread Man, Little Red Hen, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks etc

Forgot about You Choose. Our dd wanted it read so much it ended up going on little holidays.

Both DC also liked Thomas books at this age.

Another vote for The Tiger Who Came To Tea and Katie Morag.

Four year old DD enjoys Janet and Alan Ahlberg books such as Burglar Bill and Each Peach Pear Plum.

She also loves The Paper Bag Princess about a princess who defeats a dragon to save her prince, only to realise he wasn't worth saving. She also enjoyed Winnie and the Midnight Dragon and The Fish Who Could Wish with their wonderful Korky Paul illustrations. The latter is especially good, about why it isn't always a good thing to be like everyone else.

She also can't get enough of I Will Not Never Ever Eat a Tomato, which is a Charlie and Lola book about fussy eating.
