Help me remember the title of this novel

I've been pondering this for far too long.

I have somewhat vague recollection of a book I read and loved as a pre teen. It was very dated even then - in fact I think it may have been my mum's from her childhood.

All I can remember of it is one chapter towards the end where the main character (female) has to sit an exam (I think for teacher training college but could be wrong). She's got some tablets which she thinks are painkillers and takes a couple as she's feeling ill - and when she gets into the exam it becomes apparent she has taken sleeping tablets by mistake.

A friend helps her cheat somehow - but afterwards they realise that there were different examination papers and theirs weren't the same.

I know this is a crap, vague description. Hoping that someone might help though!

Was this from a mystery/thriller type of book? There was a scene similar to this in one of Christopher Pike's Final Friends books, in which the main character, Jessica, mistakes valium for caffeine pills. Her friend, Michael, passes her his answers, but they later realize they had different versions of the test. I remember this scene vividly too, although I've forgotten a lot about the rest of the plot. My friends and I loved these books, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they were, in fact, crap.

Even if it's not, it looks good. Unfortunately, now out of print but have managed to pick one up off t'internet. Curse you mumsnetter booklovers!

hdoodle - YES!!! Thank you! My brain appears to have intermingled it with something Anne of Green Gables-esque, but that's the one exactly. Am going to have to raid my parents bookshelves next time I'm there!
