for a little girl who at 5 is devouring chapter books by the day..

She loves books about dogs, and has read everything ever written by Holly Webb involving lost puppies, stolen puppies or orphaned puppies. Then we read the Faraway Tree books and the Wishing Chair books, which she?s enjoyed.

What now?

My challenge is that while she might be reading at the level of a nine year old, she?s still only five. So she doesn?t necessarily understand the storylines of books for older kids, and I don?t want her reading things that might scare her.
Also, she rather poke herself in the eye than pick up a book with a pink cover relating to fairies or princesses or any of that nonsense!!

Dick King-Smith - the Sophie books would be perfect for a five-year-old dog-lover - there are six books, and they are available as two bumper volumes - first one here. But lots of other Dick King-Smith ones would be good for her too.

How about the Pet-Finders Club series? Astorsaurs and Cows In Action are good, too.

The Secret Mermaid series of books is a great one too, although might be too girly?

What about non-ficton? Encyclopedias, books about dogs, etc, might be a good way to feed her reading whilst staying away from scary themes.

There are some chapter book versions of Winnie the Witch stories and Harry and his bucket of dinosaurs if your DD enjoyed the picture books.

Could be worth getting the Red House books magazine, as this shows books for each age group.

Labradoodle on the Loose by TM Alexander might appeal. It's aimed at 8/9 year olds, but is a short chapter book about a group of ordinary kids. Lovely stories, and in this one they lose a dog!
I agree about the Sophie books too. My 8 year old is animal mad and adored them.

My 5 yr old DS is reading books about Humphrey the hamster (by Betty G Birney) which he loves, and the Tumtum and Nutmeg books (by Emily Bean) which are about the adventures of some mice.

Naughty Amelia Jane? More Enid B - she did a load of 'blue book of Goblins' kind of books. If you do a search on ebay they're sure to come up.

Milly Molly Mandy books. The great writer Frank Cottrall Boyce refers to those books as being a major childhood influence on him.

Have a look at the Battersea Dogs Home series (Chester's Story is one of them). These are all based on dogs that have spent some time at Battersea. Also look at 'Spy Dog' and, for humour, 'The Giggler Treatment. I also endorse all previous recommendations for Dick King-Smith!
