Books for 5-6 year old boys - any recommendations?

We've got the modern classics, The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom etc. Just wondered if there were any longer story books you could recommend for boys. DS is particularily interested in vehicles, any kind although have pretty much exhausted Thomas the Tank Engine series.

Anything from the Dinosaur Cove series, Beast Quest series, Winnie the Witch chapter books, Harry and the Dinosaurs chapter books, Spy Dogs ... and any of the Magic Treehouse books, Gargoylz books, any of the Astrosaurs series ... the new ones from the guy who wrote Man on the Moon - I cant remember the name. Sorry I cant think of any with vehicles in particular though. My ds has just turned 6 and has loved all of the above. He loves the series of books rather than one offs as it gives him an incentive to read the next one/save up for it. If you need any more ideas let me know .. we get through a lot of books in this household!

I tend to buy series from Red House or Book People (as well as car boot sales and charity shops) ... the others ds likes are Horrid Henry and Roald Dahl. We have the Mr Majeika books as well but havent started any of them yet.

"The little train" by Graham greene (yes, the Brighton Rock one) is a lovely picture book for children growing out of Thomas. It's out of print but easy to get secondhand. It's illustrated by Edward ardizzone, who also wrote the "little Tim" series, which my DS1, now just 5, adores and has done for about a year. He has totally moved on from train obsession to boat obsession (again, I think they may be out of print, but I got the first few from charity shop and then abebooks)

Allan Ahlberg's Gaskitt family books, eg The Children Who Smelled a Rat are great as an introduction to chapter books as they have plenty of illustrations.

Of longer books, my DS loves 'The 100 mile an hour dog', he can't read it yet but likes me to read, eg a chapter a night at bedtime.

He also likes the Hairy Maclary books (just realised these are all dog themed!).

Little red tractor could make a change from Thomas?.

I've just ordered the DK Readers books from Amazon for DS who is 5.9 following this thread. I have found Spiderman and Marvel DK Readers which he will absolutely love! Thanks!!

You have the Gruffalo already, I agree about the Marvel readers being a good choice. Also a good read is Bluey & Dingo's Outback Adventure, perfect for young boys IMHO

I found my DS moved on to preferring factual books at that age so have a look at the 100 facts series, you can usually get good bundles via the Book People.
