Back on bl**ding branding & business names.....

Sod ...sod...sod....

Months ago I was pondering (on MN) about my business name...

The upshot (after loads of help and advise) was that I should stay Childminding@Walnut Corner....and not use anything too different for the Out-of-School Club.

So Walnut Corner Out-of-school Club was born....but now the Headmaster, 3 parents and a govenor have said that we should be XXX@Walnut Corner....but not what XXX should be......the only viable suggestion was Kids/Kidz @WC

I don't like the word KIDS never mind it being spelt wrong.

Help...do I just tell them to P* off?
Or can we come up with a good (fantastic) name??
TIA

Why do the head and parents and governor have so much influence over what you call YOUR business?

Why can't you call it what you want? (Not being controversial, just curious!)

schoolers@
children's club@
after-school@

??

or mind your own business @ walnut corner sounds good.

Twiglett Wed 20-Apr-05 21:55:59

none of their business really as 'school' and 'out of school' is a generic term and open to anyone's usage

but socially I suppose it depends how much you want to be nice to them and whether their irritation at your name will die down or whether they will bad-mouth you

KatieMac Wed 20-Apr-05 21:56:38

They don't ...except that it would (probably) please my (admittably a bit anal) mind to be
Childminding@Walnut Corner
&
XXX@Walnut Corner

I'm running the OOSC for a very small school and I offered to do this jointly with the Govners & School...they refused (but that's another story). However I do want to keep on thier good side

BTW I am the first C/Mer in Norfolk to get a grant from Surestart to run an OOSC [insert very proud icon]

Twiglett Wed 20-Apr-05 21:57:10

my club @ walnut corner

My Time @ walnut corner

Time for Fun @ Walnut Corner

free time @ walnut corner

go nuts @ walnut corner (joke)

Twiglett Wed 20-Apr-05 21:58:19

Tell them that your sure start grant is for an Out of School Club and you feel nervous giving it a businessy name because the Government are expecting you to run an 'out of school club'

KatieMac Wed 20-Apr-05 21:58:50

SP at the last yes yes yes
Twiglett I'm not sure it's irritation...I think they might be trying to be helpful....I'm not sure

The parents def were trying to help - which is nice of them

KatieMac Wed 20-Apr-05 21:59:57

Love Go nuts @Walnut Corner

RTKangaMummy Wed 20-Apr-05 22:01:54

TIME OUT @ walnut corner

or TIME OUT CLUB @ WALNUT CORNER

Twiglett Wed 20-Apr-05 22:05:28

sounds like both sides are fannying about trying not to insult the other

why don't you just put your foot down and tell them its out-of-school club

they'll get over it after a few grumbles and sideways looks

just continue being lovely to them all

KatieMac Wed 20-Apr-05 23:05:10

Hmmm....could be right Twiglet - if it wasn't for the underlying feeling that they could be right

KatieMac Wed 20-Apr-05 23:05:42

Damn I hated saying that

Play Time @ Walnut Corner

School's Out @ Walnut Corner

KatieMac Thu 21-Apr-05 07:50:52

Thanks for the suggestions everyone......I'm not sure yet, I keep hoping I'll know the right one when I see it

Out of School@Walnut Corner is a bit cumbersome....but I could say

Come and join us Out of School@Walnut Corner

KatieMac Thu 21-Apr-05 20:47:18

I've been asked to expand...

DH & I are childminders - we operate as 'childminding@walnut corner'
We wanted to open as an afterschool club with the school. They said no.
Opened it anyway called Walnut Corner Out-of-School Club & got a grant (hence new puter)

Several people have said it should be XXXXX@walnut corner.

I agree...but don't know what XXXXX should be

is that suscinct enough

hub2dee Thu 21-Apr-05 20:50:08

v. succintct.

But what are you talking about - an e-mail address or the name of your 'facility' ?

hub2dee Thu 21-Apr-05 20:51:21

May I also ask what Walnut Corner has to do with anything ?

Is it a place ? A village name ? Does everyone in the area know it ?

KatieMac Thu 21-Apr-05 20:53:40

Oh sorry the actual 'trading as' name
We are known as that nice couple with the children at Walnut Corner

Walnut COrner is the house name (well I actually named it - for the business) ...it has a large (40ft) Walnut Tree in the Corner of the garden

website & email addy to come eventually(and fit in with existing names)

KatieMac Thu 21-Apr-05 20:54:35

Oh and we are on the Corner of the road

hub2dee Thu 21-Apr-05 21:02:04

I'd check your domain name is available and perhaps work from there, if you expect Web presence to be v. important...

OK. I understand the tree thing.

Ref: Corner... You know the tree is in the corner of the garden but is it particularly 'obvious' / isolated / squished ? (not the tree, I know it's big... the 'corner' bit of the name...

Also, is it particularly significant your house is on a corner ? Are the turnings / houses so rare that this is significant ? Is there some big kind of junction thingy ? Are you deatched / terraced ?

(Building up mental image)

hub2dee Thu 21-Apr-05 21:05:27

I'm supposed to be watching a video. You are getting me in trouble. Lucky it's a bit slow.

KatieMac Thu 21-Apr-05 21:07:26

Nah....but I wanted a name and DD wanted Rose cottage.....had to pick something fast

So I had sign made £65 paid for name change at PO & Planning Permission £40 and now it's mine

I think it's better than Rose Cottage and it's slightly unusual
My house is now called Walnut Corner.....so the business is Childminding at (@)...

Out -of-School Club is jsut a bit cumbersome....

Have very nice website under construction...I'll ask if I can show you.....await email

hub2dee Thu 21-Apr-05 21:18:12

OK. I checked and walnutcorner.co.uk / .com is still available.

I would consider registering them in the next 24 hoursTBH, if the name is fixed. You can choose the e-mail address at anytime.

I would possibly suggest keeping it simple:

info@walnutc...

enquiries@walnutc...

how about nutcracker@walnut... ?
