My niece is very interested in au pairing. She wants to work with Children and soon completes her childcare course. However she is a real homebody and while she wants to au pair to make the first move out of home, she wants to stay in the uk. Is this allowed under usual au pair rules or is it different if you're staying in your own country?

She could be a live in nanny

Its a very grey area, however she can be a junior live in nanny and earn little more, but still be in the UK. It really depends on the hours/job description. there is a full description of an au pair role on the gov.uk website.

if she goes on to nanny job, there are lots of live in jobs. lots on gumtree too, where younger nannies can get experience, especially in London where a driver is not usually needed.

I would be telling her to look at mother help roles. So the hours and duties aren't so intense,as a nanny job. So she would be working along side a mum, who maybe has a new born and a toddler for example and needs that extra pair of hands. To take the toddler out to a group so the mum can have some quiet time. A lot of times the mum will then keep the mothers help on when she goes back to work and it can then proceeded into a full time nanny job which obviously pay and duties would change accordingly.
