There is what to expect guide for nannies and au pairs which has some good stuff to think about.

The key things aren't in any book though: knowing your legal rights in the country you're going to, knowing to check any agreements carefully, the attitude of jumping into the language and culture accepting that it might not always go smoothly but it should be a broadly enriching experience and having the confidence to stand up for yourself. A book might write about the importance if those like I've just done but it can't teach how to do them and it's an awful lot tougher in practice!

Ok well if it's France please feel free to DM me. I worked there as an Au Pair for 16 months so could prob mention a few things that were surprises to me.

Likewise if it's France I am pretty clued up on the employment side, what you can and cannot do, au pair rights and host family responsibilities. Less able to help with the cultural side!
