In labour. Bored. Anyone want to keep me company?

Been having contractions since about 5.30am. Currently about 8 minutes apart- I'm fed up! With DS and DD I was well on the way to them arriving (both 6 1/2 hour labours), but it looks like I'm going to take a bit longer this time around.

So, anyone care to distract me/give me any tips on how to speed things up?

smile how exciting! Are you moving around lots? I take it you are still at home?

AppleOgies Fri 01-Feb-13 10:46:10

Have no advice... I had a hospital induction so didn't have to 'amuse' myself.

Keep moving I suppose, have something to tasty to eat (get your energy up). I give rubbish advice! Good luck!

Just got up to hang the washing out, contractions went from every 8 minutes to every 4 minutes. I had to stop halfway through as it was getting too painful to bend.

Yep, still at home, planning a homebirth this time around, so DH is currently running around trying to tidy up before the midwife gets here. Not phoned her yet, I don't feel like I'm going to need her any time soon.

At the moment I'm sitting on the birthing ball watching old Manic Street Preachers videos, trying to distract myself. Think I'm going to go back to sorting out the washing now.

Ooh, how exciting.
Sideways up and down stairs (carefully) opens pelvis and will amuse your DH!

Ooh, lovely. My ctx never got any closer than 6-8 minutes apart with DS, they were 3-4 minutes long though!

Perhaps call, and say that things are happening, so they can get ready to get someone out to you later on, rather than ringing when you really need someone NOW and they faff about for an hour or two trying to find whoever is on call?

How amazing you're soon to meet new baby, wow. And here I am having a very mundane day catching up on washing and cleaning while LO has nap!
Most important tip from me is relax even when contractions hurt. Sure you managed this first and second time anyway by the sound of it but being tense slows things down and more painful apparently !
Hope it goes brilliantly smoothly and as someone else said keep moving if need to!

I have to admit I'm not looking forward to the clean up afterwards. But then, that's what DH is here for, right? I am looking forward to being able to climb into my own bed afterwards though. Our local maternity unit is perfectly nice, but not the best place to get a decent night's sleep.

It also means I get to see my other DCs (and they get to meet the baby) as soon as possible afterwards. My mum came and picked them up a couple of hours ago, I reckon they're probably having a great time, it'll be biscuits, CBeebies and jumping on the furniture all day (in other words, all the stuff horrible mean mummy doesn't allow)

Ps how special a home birth. If we ever had a third I think I'd want one too! Are your older children around?

AnathemaDevice Fri 01-Feb-13 11:19:25

Just had the first contraction that I couldn't talk or move through. Still no closer together though.

DH is now making me lunch. I'm running out of jobs for him to do. If he's not kept occupied he just stands there looking concerned, which just irritates me.

sumrandomgirl Fri 01-Feb-13 11:20:28

relax relax relax during contractions, my last birth was without pain relief and I found it the easiest, think this was coz I was fully aware of what my body was doing,
its so exiting an its cool your kids get to meet the new baby as soon as possible and at home, how are ur contractions

sumrandomgirl Fri 01-Feb-13 11:21:14

haha at the standing there concerned part...

Reaa Fri 01-Feb-13 11:22:22

Get DH to rub your back, I think you should call MF just incase things start going quicker than expected, not long and you will have baby in your arms smile

sumrandomgirl Fri 01-Feb-13 11:26:42

Ooo have u not rung them yet?? I would, and She can keep thinking of jobs for him to do while u concentrate on meeting baby, by tonight your family will be one bigger, Eeekkk...exciting times...

Bearandcub Fri 01-Feb-13 11:31:06

Ooh good luck.

AnathemaDevice Fri 01-Feb-13 11:31:40

Getting DH to phone the midwife now. Still 8 minutes apart but quite painful. Beginning to remember exactly how painful it is now. Still, I've done it twice before, I can do it again.

I'm trying to relax, and remember all the hypnobirthing breathing. Looking forward to the gas and air arriving though.

Flisspaps Fri 01-Feb-13 11:32:35

The MWs will clean up the mess afterwards, I wouldn't worry about that!

FlouncingMintyy Fri 01-Feb-13 11:32:57

How exciting! I don't know why but I just think its so cool to have a birthday on the 1st of the month. Good luck op!

flamingtoaster Fri 01-Feb-13 11:38:19

Oh how exciting! Hope things speed up soon for you. If you want to keep DH busy are you sure the windows don't need polishing or anything? smile

Reaa Fri 01-Feb-13 11:41:09

I second the cleaning windows and add in skirting boards smile

AnathemaDevice Fri 01-Feb-13 11:41:39

No answer when DH phoned the midwives. He's going to try the daytime number again, then call the central delivery suite and hope they can get hold of whoever is on duty today. I hope it's the midwife I've seen all the way through, 'cos she's lovely.

AnathemaDevice Fri 01-Feb-13 12:02:11

DH is now dancing to try and keep me entertained. I may lock him out of the house when the mdwife gets here.

sumrandomgirl Fri 01-Feb-13 12:08:06

he may faint with relief when She arrives haha, he sounds paniced poor guy, bet he is driving u crazy,
how are your contractions now x

AnathemaDevice Fri 01-Feb-13 12:17:03

Midwife is on her way, so I'm turning the computer off now. I'll be back later to let you know how it all went. Contractions are now 4 minutes apart and quite painful.

Hopefully I'll be back soon!
