Postpartum Bleeding and your first period after birth.....

Hi everyone

I gave birth nearly 6 weeks ago and had some problems with postpartum bleeding, I stopped in the first week then started bleeding quite heavy and had a swab taken and there was an infection so after a scan which revealed nothing was left inside me and some heavy antibiotics for 2 weeks all seemed to be clearing up and I ended up with pinkish discharge then clear discharge then nothing. I have been feeling very down and a bit periody over last few days and had some dark and clear discharge yesterday which is most I have had since it cleared up and this morning I woke up and had a smear of fresh blood (periody) and some dark discharge but nothing since although still feel periody...............could this be my first period and what is the discharge all about??
Sorry to be so graphic but looking for some reasurance maybe if anyone else out there has had this after giving birth.

I know that my bleeding lasted for roughly 6 weeks, some days it would be light and others heavy. It depended if I had done too much that day. Also that any discharge I would get even after the bleeding stopped was light a light period for a day and then stop again.

i gave birth 7 weeks go tomorrow. my lochia went from red to brown to yellow in textbook fashion, then last week suddenly started red bleeding again, wondered if it was a period but i'm bf. now it's dwindling off again and going yellowish. i reckon it's prob normal, but if you have had an infection you might like to get it checked out just in case.

are you breastfeeding?
i had a c-section (so theoretically less bleeding after) and followed the normal slow down of bleeding, lochia, yellow stuff etc. then exactly 30 days after ds was born (not bfing) i had my first period. it was so heavy that i thought something was really wrong so i rang the midwife to check. she told me that unless i was having to use towels (bath not sanitary) then it was fine!!!!! she also said it was quite normal to have a very heavy (and so scarey) period if you don't bf quite soon after giving birth.
not sure if that helps, but if you suddenly start pouring blood for any reason, i would always contact your mw or hv.

Thanks joseyjo
contacted my midwife and she said sounds like a period...and have been looking on internet and you are right this can happen. She suggested that if it does not clear up after normal time then go see my g.p so will do that. No not breastfeeding but was for the first week.
