Have just seen an AIBU thread about having a cup of tea after and have been reminded of the bowl of sticky toffee pud and custard the midwife gave me which was AMAZING, even though cold. Even my sarnie at lunch tasted really good.

What did you have?

After DS was born at 8pm, obviously I had no choice but to stay the night in hospital. I wasn't allowed anything to eat the whole time, just nasty sugary squash to keep my energy up during labour. I was so desperate to go home as soon as possible. DP came to get us the following lunchtime and (I probably shouldn't admit this on MN!) I made him take me to McDonalds as I hadn't eaten anything for 36 hours. That burger was fab.

After DD, I was given fish, chips and peas for lunch, followed by plum crumble and custard, and that was lovely too smile

DS was born at home and I had hot buttered muffins and tea and a slug of champagne.

First labour I had nothing to eat from lunchtime on the Thursday until the bar of chocolate my husband brought me at 4pm on the Saturday afternoon after the baby had been born. Best taste ever.

By the time I got back to the postnatal ward, they'd already served their disgusting supper and I'd missed yet another meal and there was nothing available. I barely made it out alive from that hospital- nearly starved to death. I discharged myself at 11am on the Sunday and had the best Sunday lunch ever.

That was 16 years ago and I think that things have changed a lot since then.

tea and toast - and I was really disappointed that it wasn't the best tea and toast I'd ever had as everyone kept promising. To be honest I didn't care about eating - I just wanted to look at DD.

Tea and toast, which I promptly threw back up so DH sat eating hmm

Homebirth at 6.03 pm, chinese on the table by 8pm! Was the best bloody chinese ever!

Nothing. No toast or anything else offered, and then if you were on SCBU with your baby, no one would tell you it was a mealtime/save you anything.

Plus I am coeliac, and you had to personally tell the ward kitchen an hour before every meal if you wanted a special meal.

So DH brought me in every meal for a week

Tea and toast, which was soon deposited down the shower plug hole hmm blush no time to run to the next room where the toilet was!

DS1 - bowl of cereal to show nurse I wouldn't be sick. Closely followed by pizza and chocolate. Then a roast dinner 2 hrs later. Canadain hospital; hellbent on feeding you up grin

DS2 - begged to be let out of recovery after 2 hours so I could get my mitts of my tuna sandwiches, apple juice, crisps and chocolate.

Both were elec CSs.

With ds1 they offered semi-frozen cardboard type cheese sarnies, crisps, choc bar and un-ripe banana and was made to feel I should be lucky to get this. Couldn't face it. (Gave birth late evening.)
With ds2 missed breakfast (born at breakfast-time) so nothing until some kind of mashed potato pie with indescribable splodge under with potatoes on the side four and a half hours later. Couldn't face it.
With dd offered the sarnies (middle of the night) but refused. Dh went for coffee and huge croissants the minute the shop opened (BLISS!) which was then followed by 'breakfast' (tiny pack of cereal and slice of horrible white bread an hour and a half later.

letsgostrawberrypicking Mon 24-Aug-09 14:34:28

Tea and toast - it was lovely!!

MrsBadger Mon 24-Aug-09 14:35:27

anything I could lay my hands on

tea and toast
then dh's tea and toast

then the sandwich lunch DH brought me
then DH's sandwich lunch

then the lunch ordered by the woman who had been in my bed before me but had since been discharged

then the dinner ditto

then all the breakfast I could wheedle out of the woman on the catering trolley (ie all of mine and all the leftover toast)

my god I was ravenous - wasn't even a long labour and I hadn't been sick or anything

grin Mon 24-Aug-09 14:43:55

MrsBadger you are a woman after my own heart.

midnightexpress Mon 24-Aug-09 14:47:37

Tea and toast (it was the middle of the night, both times), and it was FABULOUS. Though I could have eaten about 6 times as much as they gave me.

The hospital food was dire though, so DP was dispatched pronto to M&S to bring me Fine Things to eat.

sweetnitanitro Mon 24-Aug-09 14:50:07

I couldn't eat or drink anything but cherry nutrigrain bars and banana nesquik blush for about 10 days after DD was born, everything else tasted like cardboard.

cyteen Mon 24-Aug-09 14:51:08

Crap tea and toast, then not very much for the next couple of days because I couldn't sit down (thank you very much piles and stitches angry). Was weak and feeble.

Had DS on the Monday, and when we got home on Wednesday afternoon DP cooked fish, mash and peas and fed me while I fed DS. That was the best meal ever

greensnail Mon 24-Aug-09 14:59:58

They brought me tea and toast but i couldn't really stomach the toast. Enjoyed the tea though even though I couldn't stand the stuff the whole time I was pregnant.

First proper meal I had after was the hospital christmas dinner - now that has to be the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten.

LadyStealthPolarBear Mon 24-Aug-09 15:00:11

arrgh nothing apart from snack bars and raisins! DH had gone off with the sandwiches I'd made angry. Had them the next morning though, which was lovely. This time I'm going prepared!
